Lord of the Dance
Michael Ryan Flatley was born on July 16, 1958
in Michigan, United States, of Irish descent.
He was raised in Chicago. Michael was the
second of five children.
His parents are Michael and Eilish Flatley,
who emigrated from Ireland in 1947.
His father came from Furteen, County Sligo.
His mother from County Carlow.
Height: 5'9" tall
Weight: 159 lbs.
Hair: Blonde
Eye color: One blue, one green.
Michael was only four years old when
his grandmother, a champion Irish dancer
from Carlow, Ireland, taught him his first steps.
At the age of 11 his mother,
also an Irish dancing champion, took
him to dance classes.
However, he was discouraged because he was
told he was too old.
With hard work, and perserverance, he became
the first American to win the World Irish
Dance Championships at the age of 16, in 1975.
He won the All-Ireland Flute Championship
and achieved the Chicago Golden Gloves
Amateur Boxing competition in 1975.
He was featured in a National Geographic
magazine in 1991. And has broken the world
record for tap dancing speed.---
35 taps per second.
Once, part of Riverdance, Michael was released
because of his refusal to relenquish his
choreographic copyright.
Just weeks after dismissal with Riverdance,
he began the original
concept of Lord of the Dance, and all
Irish
show. The dancers are
from
Ireland or are
descendant
of Ireland, but
from all corners of the world.
In the summer of 1996,
Lord of the Dance
premiered in Dublin, Ireland. And the rest is
history.....
