Running to Stand Still

The history of U2 starts in 1976.
Four boys from Mount Temple High School
congregated at the house of Larry Mullen, Jr.'s
in the kitchen. They formed a band from a
group called FeedBack. Later, in 1977, they
named the newly formed group "Hype". Not
satisfied with the name, in 1978, the boys
again changed their band's name to
U2
...and
has remained permanently.
The group consists of four. Edge (real name:
David Evans), Bono (real name: Paul David Hewson),
Adam (real name: Adam Clayton), and Larry (real
name: Larry Mullen, Jr.).
Edge was born in London, England in August 1961. He has
a wife and five children. Bono was born in
Dublin, Ireland in May 1960. He is married, and
has four children. The only single, unattached
member is Adam. Adam was born in Oxforshire, England.
Born in Dublin, Ireland in October 1961 is Larry.
He has a girlfriend and together they have
five children.
Edge plays guitar, Bono (nicknamed "Bono Vox", meaning
Good Voice in Latin) is the vocalist. The bass
guitarist is Adam and on drums, is Larry.
The quartet was a hit in Ireland almost
immediately. Their biggest release came with
War
, in 1983. Raising the white
flag during a performance became a trademark
for Bono. With lyrics of violence, in
Northern Ireland,
Sunday, Bloody Sunday
became the group's anthem.
The album,
Joshua Tree
, released in
1987...at the time, was the fastest selling
album in United Kingdom's history. It also
remained on the top of the charts in the
United States for nine weeks.
The band holds the distinction of being
on the cover of the TIME� magazine. Only
two other rock groups have had the privilege.
With the ZOO-Tour over in 1992, they took a
well deserved and much needed break to be
with family and other interests...making a
grand re-entrance into the music world in
1995. Another tour, POP-MART-Tour, in 1997
allowed the band the second highest grossing
tour in the history at the time....$79.9 millon
(U.S. dollars). The tour lasted through 1998.
Afterwards, they returned to Ireland for more
song writing and recording. they are on
world wide tour
once again as of this writing.
