Jim ha detto a McCann: "Put the kettle on so we can have a chat."

Jim in suit???

16/12/98 : dal sito ufficiale un messaggio di Jim: "December comes and while all around is frozen white outside, it is like a sweatshop in here - being the control room from which we surge forward in our task of creating a new collection of songs for next year the sauna/sweatshop effect - a result of the heat that if from the vast amount of electronic equipment that Charlie Burchill has ammassed in what was formely my living room ! No wonder the dogs are looking confused. Even I'm confused. The place feels like a biosphere ! Or let me put it another way - I can imagine how those Russian cosmonauts feel - in that they also spend weeks on end, only in each others company - isolated from the outside world and surrounded by computers and wires etc. Actually maybe we should call this album "MIR" !!! Anyway while we may not actually be floating thru the air, we are nevertheless feeling buoyant at the ideas that are surfacing within this period of creativity. As I've said before, in terms of productivity this is probably the stage that I enjoy the most. To me it is now that ideas are all about potential and possibilities, and it is around this time that loose concepts really start to grow into something special, or on the other hand fizzle out to some vague place called backburner !! I already feel that the music is probably our most intimate to date. Probably better described at this stage as small music with big emotional power, and as clumsy as this description is - it is the only way I can signal the effect of my current favourites of the batch. - "Our Secrets Are The Same" and "Christians" - I am very excited about both of these new songs !..... So this is where we are for the moment and this is the mood in our camp as we glide into 1999. Speaking of which, I want to wish all the very best to all for this up and coming year. As for this year that is suddenly behind us - to each and all who attended the shows and gave so much encouragement - a billion thanks !! Wishing you a Merry Xmas and A happy New Year. See You In 1999 !!"

13/10/98 : finalmente il sito ufficiale e' stato aggiornato, ecco le news: "Charlie Burchill has officially kick-started the writing/recording process for a new Minds album which is due to be released in the middle of next year. The recordings have been initiated at Jim Kerr's home studio in Central Scotland and it is felt that both Charlie and Jim will collaborate with other musicians as the record evolves.
As well as focusing on the new Simple Minds album sessions, Jim Kerr has been asked to present a two-hour documentary on the city of Naples for BBC radio. The broadcast will feature many facets of the city, from it's fascinating past to it's current revival, and in doing so will take in the people, politics, culture and art of the proud southern metropolis. Jim Kerr said "I'm a big fan of informative radio and throughout my many and varied travels have always listened to the BBC world service. My love of southern Italy is already well documented and I hope to capture as much as I can of the genuine Metropolitan spirit and outlook on life.
Stan Tippins, the Simple Minds tour manager over the last ten years has apparently retired from touring. Tippins, who began his music experiences in the early sixties as a singer with various club acts and has also been tour manager with Mott the Hoople, The Pretenders, Sade and Lou Reed, is said to have felt the demands of constant touring were starting to play havoc with his health. A very dubious statement regarding Stan's decision was issued from the Minds camp "Stan says this at the end of every tour. He can be a moody old bugger, but it is our opinion that come Xmas he will have changed his mind. We will never let him get away with this, as we would miss him too much. And if he has told anyone of this decision then it is more than likely he was winding them up!
Mel Gaynor has been asked to work on the new album by the reformed Roxy Music. Although nothing has been formalised it is believed Gaynor will jump at the chance to make a contribution to the music of the legendary Bryan Ferry and Brian Eno et al.
Derek Forbes has spent the last weeks moving from his inner city home. Derek said "I was brought up a city boy and I love Glasgow very much, however the countryside of Scotland is intensely beautiful and I want to spend the next few years absorbing life in the open spaces. This new residence also gives me the facility to create my own studio and I look forward to working on the Minds album as well."

[Fonte: Alistair Wade]

1/ 9/98 : pare che The Early Years sia stato rimesso sul mercato. Le copie non sono molte, quindi affrettatevi!

2/ 8/98 : tratto da un articolo del quotidiano scozzese "the Scotsman" (01/08/1998):
"A former music industry highflier was in jail last night after being convicted of trying to burn down the house of the man he blamed for ruining his dreams of escaping the rat race. Paul Kerr, brother of the Simple Minds singer Jim Kerr, set fire to the house of John Darroch, who he believed had ripped him off over the sale of a village store in Argyll."

Never Surrender - Shaw/Taylor
Iain Banks - Iain Banks
Orgasmaphobia - Shaw/Harvey/Moss/Childs/Wells
Energy - Shaw/MacNeil

20/ 7/98 : "On the afternoon of July 2 some of the band members were confronted with a bombing incident in the city of Budapest. None of the band members were injured. The incident resulted in the loss of 4 human lifes."

30/ 6/98 : attenzione! Direttamente dalla mailing list Mike scrive:
"I am starting to come up with ideas for a project to make a Neapolis Tour bootleg CD available for everyone either for free or for a small, small cost. This would be an audience recording, but an extremely high quality one-recorded using a special stereo microphone attached to a DAT recorder. In a month or so, I should have such a recording and can start working on distributing it to whoever wants it. But what I need to know is... Who's interested in such a CD set? How should it be distributed? In other words, would people just like to pay a small price for it (maybe $15-20 for a 2 CD set with color inserts), or would you prefer to mail in 2 blank CD's and return postage? Or would many of you be able to just take it off my website as mp3 files? Or do you have other ideas? If there are many people (100+) interested in such a CD set, I'd like to enlist a number of people with CD-recorders across the globe to split up the job. Anyone out there willing to sign on as a volunteer CD-copier?"

(che mi ricorda Kick It In)

24/12/98 : "The proposed takeover of Celtic by a consortium including Kenny Dalglish and Jim Kerr has collapsed. The consortium have pulled out of the bid for the Parkhead club after owner Fergus McCann rejected an initial bid last week, claiming their business plan was not up to scratch. But Dalglish and Kerr have said they are still willing to return with a renewed bid if McCann is prepared to listen to what they have to say. Simple Minds front man Kerr said to McCann: "Put the kettle on so we can have a chat." McCann has so far refused to even speak to Dalglish, even though the club is openly up for sale."

7/10/98 : it seems that, after the latest accidents related to James jr., Patsy Kensit and Liam Gallagher will get divorced.

13/ 9/98 : ''Former Simple Minds member (well she did play on SFY and associated tour and appeared in the Belfast Child and This Is Your Land videos), Lisa Germano will be touring the UK with US band The Eels later this month:
Wolverhampton 24th - Glasgow 25th - Sheffield 26th - London 28th
With The Minds failure to appear in the UK this could be the nearest we get to see them!''

[Source: Alistair Wade]

5/ 9/98 : ''Simple Minds drummer Mel Gaynor is looking to exploit what he perceives as a gap in the UK market for rap by establishing a label dedicated to the music.
Gaynor is currently negotiating with majors for financial backing and distribution for Ruff Cut Recording, hoping to build up the label so it can export rap back to the Americans. Weve done a lot of research and believe the UK isnt being utilised. No big label has an outpost here, he says.
Gaynor claims to have a start on his UK competition by signing US rapper Tim Dog, a member of pioneering east coast rap crew Ultramagnetic MCs. He adds that his Simple Minds job provides him with an inside track on meeting musicians suited to Ruff Cut.''

Never Surrender - Shaw/Taylor
Iain Banks - Iain Banks
Orgasmaphobia - Shaw/Harvey/Moss/Childs/Wells
Energy - Shaw/MacNeil
Mick MacNeil plays keyboards on Never Surrender, Iain Banks and Orgasmaphobia and he plays all instruments on Energy.

22/ 7/98 : it seems that a third single from Neapolis will be never released, due to the flop of the first two singles, Glitterball and War Babies.

7/ 7/98 : Jim feels better and the two gigs in Dublin are confirmed.

5/ 7/98 : it seems that Jim is ill because of food eated before the today show in Hyde Park. Capital Radio cancelled SM from the lineup. Nothing is confirmed and there's nothing more than this.

3/ 7/98 : Capital, the London based radio station who are involved with the Prince's trust concert (July, 5th), are broadcasting the concert. It will be live at: http://capitalfm.com/partyinthepark/

22/ 6/98 : in the last few days there were a lot of rumours about a new live album, but nothing is officially confirmed. You will see something more "sure" on these pages!

17/ 6/98 : Mick MacNeil has recently surfaced. He's been playing keyboards on Then Jerico's new album, Orgasmaphobia, plus he co-wrote the ending instrumental piece Energy. (Which reminded me of Kick It In.) He also plays alone on the spooky instrumental Iain Banks, on which the Scottish author narrates a piece from one of his books. MacNeil also plays keyboards on two other songs. This is much greater than his involvement in the System 7 project. Plus Energy was recorded at Mick's own Mickmac studio in Glasgow.

16/ 6/98 : Bologna concert (14/6) was a great success, but most of all, a wonderful live performance! I will put online (as soon as possible) some reviews and shots from this event; in the meantime, take a look at some photos that Cristina did in Milano and Pesaro. Click here!

12/ 6/98 : Neapolis lyrics will be soon on-line at Simon Cornwell's site. Click here!

8/ 6/98 : Roliing Stones' concert in Zagreb: few days ago, the new date has been announced -- it's August 23rd, the same place (that place received one million people during the Pope's visit few years ago, so it's pretty big).
Approx. 60 000 tickets are sold, probably some will be returned, but some more people will buy too, so I guess there shall be more than 60 000 people there finally.
Unfortunately, Simple Minds are under big question... But some newspapers here leave it opened, so I still hope... Especially if you take a look at SM tour schedule -- August is empty...

4/ 6/98 : according to todays (3/6/98) N.M.E, the Manic Street Preachers have been trying to get a sound reminiscent of SIMPLE MINDS classic 'THE AMERICAN' for their new album.
Should be interesting.

12/ 5/98 : Simple Minds will feature in a one hour documentary film which will be made before, during and after their up and coming Euro-tour which begins the last week of May. The film directed by Stuart McKenzie (album designer) and Jim Kerr, will most probably be released publicly in the bands soon to be launched film company "Minds-Eye". The feel of the documentary is thought to be a real "Fly on the Wall Perspective" of all the varying elements that contribute to the Minds live experience. McKenzie says "The documentary's aim will be to satisfy the interests of Minds purists, and in doing so avoid the polished, edited, bland formats that make it just fodder.
