Anawana Memories (S-Z)
Gary Sabshon camper, waiter 1967-73, '74 and '75 Memories: Reveille, taps. Laundry - whites and colors. Making my bed. Inspection. All day all night basketball. Parker's Coughs. Getting on Larry or Jerry's bad side and staying there. Roark's. The big rock behind the Movie Theater at the Jamesway shopping center. You are supposed to be quiet during the serves at a volleyball tournament - whoops! Swan dive off the rafters with JP yelling, "Pack your things" after a visit to Roark's, but getting to stay because the same guy bathed me when I was 6. Elyse Newel - the sweetest waitress ever. Howie Katz's "stereo" and 8 track collection (Todd Rundgren). Straight Jacket not Psycho. Hats off. Brooklyn versus the world. Glen Geffner - greatest natural athlete I ever saw (at age 10, no kidding won the decathlon for the camp as a sophomore). Dumping canoes and getting dry docked for it. (Danny Fife. Carl Wachter. Mitchell Silpe. Saul Factor. Mike Finklestein. Get those guys in a room). Mike Weiss where are you? Handwerker and Lurch (Why?). Color war football games feeling like the super bowl (with John Facenda narrating). Grease - Moonin'. Mud sliding during rainstorms. "(Fill in the blank) for president RAW, (Fill in the blank) for vice president - RAW, (Fill in the blank) for secretary - RAW, (Fill in the blank) eats it off a stick doo dah doo dah etc."; 20 guys in bunk 3 with 5 guys in bunk 4. Stickball - over the dining room's a home run, I passed my deepy test, Hey Steve, Let's give Robin a hand (ok I was jealous). The whole camp following Ronnie Feuchs as he finishes his 250th mile (it was 250 not 50), talk about focus. Alan Rosenthal having to play sports with the seniors because whichever team he was on in the juniors killed the other team every time no matter what sport. Brooks helping me prep for my Bar Mitzvah. Mike Riordan breaking color war. Water skiing on that beautiful lake. Watching Alan Eisele open up mail from his sister. Lights out. Ike's on the rampage. Gussie throwing a fit ("you got 8 kids, why you got 24 towels, where you get these, come back here"). Just having the time and nothing to worry about. If I'd have known then what I do now I would have savored the days just a little bit more. Comments: I'm very pleased to have found this web page. Neal Shusterman Camper, counselor, group leader 72-77, 80-85 Memories: AS A CAMPER: Tormenting Gussie. Staying up until midnight, waiting for our counselors to come back with Heroes from Giovanni's. Tormenting Phil-the-Bimmie. Getting the lady at the switchboard (who may or may not have been my mother) to call "Jack Meoff back to your bunk." Tormenting John Q. Hinton. Mitchell Silpe chugging ketchup straight from the bottle. Tormenting Red Karbel. Camp-outs at the old Sherwood waterfront. Tormenting Lewis Manheimer. AS A COUNSELOR AND GROUPLEADER: Making up stories to tell at night. Getting my first glimpse, and appreciation of what it would be like to be a father. Painting the totem pole and show plaques. Seeing snot-nosed kids turn into real Mensches. Hearing the kid everyone called "Goose" singing Friday-night Kiddush SOOOO off-key, I can still hear it ringing in my ears. Watching my girlfriend become the only person in recorded history to tell-off Jerry Parker. I married this girl. Finally understanding why my group leaders always burst into tears on the last day of camp, when I was a kid. Comments: As both a camper and counselor, Anawana has played such an important part of my life. Being a camper turned me from being a total non-athlete, into a varsity swimmer. My career as an author of young-adult novels began because of the stories I used to tell when I was a counselor. And I know my years as a counselor made me a better father to my children. Do you ever have dreams that you're back at camp? I do. It's always the first day, and I'm filled with that adrenaline rush of being back at camp. That's a feeling worth holding onto! Isabel Simon Freshman Group Leader & Girl's Head Counselor, 1982-closing Memories: My most favorite memories are all about Girl's Sing. From rehearsals to the performance night, I was in a constant state of excitement. To this day, I often find myself singing the songs of Freshman Felines. However, as Head Counselor, the feelings I had at each line-up remain very close to my heart. The morning and evening line-ups were a most special part of each day. More than what we talked about, it was the faces and the feelings that each of the faces evoked. To see young women as counselors, and remember the day they were in freshman bunk 18, made my eyes fill with tears every time. Above all else, camp was all about the people, many of whom remain our dearest friends to this day. For that alone, Anawana will be forever in our hearts. Comments: For me, Anawana will always be a part of my life. It is where Myron and I met. We just celebrated our 36th wedding anniversary. Camp Anawana is where our children, Laurie and Randi, grew up. It is where they developed lasting friendships and celebrate beautiful memories. We are dear friends with Linda and Dave Rosenthal, Roberta and Jeff Herdan, Caryn and Billie Freilich, Karen and Artie Leitner, and Randy and Mike Goldman. I'd love to find Jill Shuker. Email Isabel

Sara Wilson Camper Memories: Color War is one of my fondest memories. When the helicopter dropped flyers down all over the camp or when Crazy Tyrone came out of the tent near the field house to announce that color war had officially begun. I also thought it was great when the fire truck came onto girl's campus and sprayed everyone at 2am. The plaques were amazing and I wish I could get a hold of some of the ones that we made. Meals were great, the chants we used to do as a bunk. I remember the raids we did...how sneaky we thought we were. Also, the search for the buried tomahawk? I remember when we were the orange team and when Theo Gilberg found the hatchet. It was really great. Comments: Anawana was great. It supplied me with a lot of valuable memories and life lessons that I refer back to even to this day. I miss all the people and all the fun we used to have. Keep the memories alive...this web site is great... spread the word. Who Would You Like to Contact? I can't recall last names, but anyone who was around from 90-92... or went to KSA after the close of Anawana....keep in touch

Deborah Winikoff Camper 1985-1989 Memories: So many memories- being the youngest girls at camp, wearing 3 pairs of sweatpants and champion sweatshirts at morning line-up only to come out of breakfast to blistering heat, Girl's Sing, all the camp plays, staying up all night with Amy and Chessie with tennis rackets and Amy's cleats fearing a raid, rainy days in the Lounge, sitting at Larry and Jerry's table for meals, "clothes on the washline, dry up?" "Amy?s the ringleader", Girls Bunk 8 is awesome 'cause we got her and her and her and her and her, and stud muffin; lining up by Girls Bunk 13 waiting for our parents on parents day, going to the hotel for birthdays, and so much more?. Some of the best memories of my life are from camp. Who are you in contact with? I still talk to Amy Koppelman Sonstein on a regular basis and Melissa Luftman on occasion. Howie Wizenberg Counselor, group leader 1971-76 Comments: Steven Lillianthal, a former camper (brother of Mindi and son of Camp Mom Marcia & Dad Sherman), was lost in the WTC attack 9/11. There should be a tribute to honor his memory during the reunion. I suggest that money collected from the auction should be donated in his memory either to his children's educational fund or in his memory to a charity of his family's choice. Email Howie
