Kenny Funk Camper 1972-1973 Memories: The 3 most memorable experiences coincidentally happened in the same hour and a half. 1) Joan Crawford's portrayal of Lucy Harbin, who chops up the bodies of her cheating husband and his lover, before the opening credits even come on, in the movie Straight Jacket (1964) 2) Also from Straight Jacket, the famous chicken coop scene, where Academy Award winner George Kennedy gets his head whacked off, presumably by ex-mental patient Harbin (wonderfully portrayed on the screen by Miss Crawford). PS The TV Version omits the last few frames of the scene, after the axe comes down on Mr. Kennedy's head. 3) Last but not least, and also from the film Straight Jacket, Lucy's (now grown up) daughter is getting married. Her soon-to-be father-in-law is shaving. Who does he happen to see standing behind him in the reflection of the mirror? Why, none other than axe-grinding Lucy Harbin (presumably). All this brought to you by the Oscar snubbed performance of a lifetime, of one Joan Crawford. I am Mark Gross and was a waiter and counselor at Camp Anawana from 1969-73. I worked with Howie Warhaftig and I can't remember the other counselors. I have a few pictures. Some of the waiters and counselors I worked with were Marvin Fine, Howie Appelbaum, Neil Forrest; I'll have to rack my brain for the rest. Who can forget Jerry Parker "upski and outski"! ...color wars...finding the hatchet, canoeing on the lake, rainy day movies ... Gussie, the 200 year old lady who always took our laundry. I was the resident golf pro at the camp when I was counselor in 72, 73 and had the best time. We'd play Kutshers golf course in the afternoon. What a way to spend the day! Of course I had my 13 year olds to look after in the bunk. I was a waiter there in 1969 when we landed on the moon. We had the TVs on in the Field House. Well after I finished college at Indiana University Bloomington, I moved to San Francisco. Was there for 18 years and then moved to Australia in 1996 and been here ever since. Cheers, Mark

Florie Hammelburger Camper, 1960-1969 Memories: Camp Anawana was a huge part of my life, and a wonderful set of memories. I started there as a 7-year-old and stopped going a year or so before college. The greatest part was that so many friends went back year-after-year. I remember my friends, Brooks, Color War, cleaning the sheets on Fridays while guests of Kutsher's walked through the camp, intercamp games, the old social hall and then the new field house ... a very warm, closely-connected camp. It was the greatest. *Received 2/23/03*: I'm not sure if I already wrote here, but it's worth a second time, just to be sure. Anawana was an amazing life experience, something those of us were able to participate in for a sustained period of time, really benefited from. I remember some of the friends that I lived with for almost a decade's worth of summers - Karen Kutcher, Helene Kamhi, Dale Flashner. It was very idyllic - intimate, nurturing ... fun! Mark Horowitz Camper I went to Camp Anawana between 1962 and 1968 - what we Baby Boomers like to think of as the glory years My brother Josh also went during that time period as did my cousins Helene and Neal Berkowitz. I visited the camp grounds over Memorial Day weekend (2001) while I was at Kutsher's with my family. The area from Anawana Lake Road down to the lake is still maintained by Kutsher's for the use of its guests. They call it "Club Anawana" now and during the summer months they have swimming and boating on the lake and provide a "lake staff." The old waterfront is completely gone, as is the Old Social Hall which overlooked the waterfront. Too bad - we had some great times there. On a tree a few feet up the hill from where the waterfront used to be is a plaque dedicated to Brooks Brickman. The area above Anawana Lake Road, where the bunks and playing fields were, is abandoned and deserted. I took some photos - they aren't happy pictures because there are no people in them. Bittersweet is a better description. But the place is still so beautiful; maybe seeing it again will stir up some memories in our alumnae and provide the impetus for a long overdue reunion. That would be a worthwhile project I would want to be involved in. Email Mark
