Anawana Memories (L-R)
Rochelle (Shelly) Leiber-Miller Camper,Counselor 1960-1968 Memories: I have the greatest memories of Camp Anawana. Started as a camper when the Kutsher family bought it in 1960, and then became a counselor. My sister Lynn Leiber was a counselor for a year or two. Remember all of the basketball players that came to visit, the rides to Kutshers in the laundry truck, the song about Marty Pinkus for Color War. It was great in the early years, small and like a family. I met Carol Mednick at an aiport three years ago. She lives in NY. Also met my best friend Joanne Cella there in 1967. Memories: Would love to hear from old friends and campers. Anyone you would like to contact (or whom you are in contact with already)? I am in contact with Joanne Cella, Shelly Lazar. Would like to find Neal Walk (1967,68). Also Jeannie Kafitan, she was a camper with me in the early 60's. Email Shelly

Howard Levine Camper, 65-70 Memories: Where do I begin? By 1969 when people asked "what do you want to be when you grow up?" the answer was "director of Camp Anawana"! Unfortunately, my family moved to Florida in 1970, but I still managed to convince my parents to let me go back for one more summer. I'm convinced that Camp had much to do with the man I am today - so many great memories all brought back by finding this website - thanks to my sister Marney. Comments: To all the friends and camp mates left behind years ago, it would be great to hear from you! Mel Wichter, Larry Parker, Irv Magram Howie (now Howard) Who are you in contact with or would like to contact? Regrettably, have not kept in touch with anyone - email any time - anyone in Florida? My loss as Color War General in my only attempt still haunts me. I had all of the Arts and Crafts type on my team, no athletes. Comments: I had to post this: I was in the Hamptons last weekend (8/2-8/4) and heard that Ron Dagan was alive and well, and playing at a house party in Quogue. As soon as we confirmed that I would be seeing Dagan, I started drinking and took a cab with 3 other guys and drove 30 miles from Southampton to see him. The guy is a legend; he gets better with age. There were like 150 people there. He gave shout outs to Anawana and played his signature song, "I'm going to teach you a new word today, in Hebrew the word is Shalom." He also had a 9 and 11 year old boy as back up singers in his band. The guy told me he still does the Jewish camp circuit but now makes a killing doing the Senior Citizen Circuit at the Del Boca Vistas of the world in South FLA Email Andrew

Allison Marantz Camper, 1980-1982 Memories: I remember being afraid of the dark, afraid of ghosts in the night, sucking my thumb till I was 12 and being away from home for 2 months being too long for me. But I have some great memories and think that every child should experience what we all had the privilege to experience by going to sleepaway camp. Anawana was a great camp and was saddened to hear Kutcher's closed it down. Some of my memories are: The connecting rafters in bunks 8 and 9. Waterskiing down by the lake. Horseback Riding at "M" circle (I think that was the name). Overnight camping by the old camp grounds. Berry Picking. Old chants in the mess hall like "Quiet Please. Dedicated to...." Food waiter, waiter, waiter. Food Waiter, waiter. And of course food fights. Color War, "We're orange we're blue we're better than you". The dating game. Lying on the floor watching old James Bond Movies in the gym. The nature hut. Raiding the boys bunk in the middle of the night and whipping up concoctions from tooth paste, mouth wash, and shampoo to squirt at them. The haunting ghost of the cook who died in the old mess hall that burned down. I remember the year when they built the new bunks over the old mess hall. Hello Kitty stationery and sticker trading. And of course who can ever forget Jerry and Larry. Some of my bunkmates were Myra Palevsky, Barrie Stashower, Amy Kabinoff, Dori, Stephanie, Elisha, Michelle (can't remember last names of all). Went to Anawana for two or three years and then went to a travel camp when I was 13. Comments: Would love to hear from anyone who remembers me. Who are you in contact with or would like to contact? I grew up across the street from Myra Palevsky so I'm still in touch with her. Would be interested in hearing from the girls who were my bunkmates and also from my hometown neighborhood (Mill Basin, B'klyn) like Barrie Stashower and Amy Kabinoff. Email Allison

Would love to hear from long-lost friends. Email William

Dick (Richard) McCarthy Staff, Tennis Memories: All the Staff

Hugh McKinney 1981 Counselor Memories: Wow, where to start?
I was a counsellor at the camp in 1981, within a bunk house and coaching soccer when I was a young student from Scotland and this was my first time in the US. What a great time - I can't begin to tell you how these memories have stayed with me.
I was only there one summer but it left indelible memories forever.
The main people I remember are the Parker brothers Jerry and Larry, I was really sorry to see that Jerry has died, Brooks, of course and many of the regular staff.
It was a real culture shock, being in the US for the first time, being non-Jewish, having to cope with American children who, if you threw them a ball would rather catch it or hit it with a bat rather than kick it into a soccer goal.
The snapping turtles in the lake - in Scotland, the worst we have to cope with (if you discount Nessie) is the trout which nobbles at your feet when you swim in the Lochs.
Everything was larger than life - the food, the people, the culture.
I remember the outdoor "synagogues" on Friday nights when we held prayers outdoors.
The culture shock was a very big slap in the face but I remember the people above all.
The kindness, the wonderfulness of the people in the camp was unforgettable - everybody made such a huge effort to make the British people feel at home and I was always grateful for that.
America is a great, great country and the people I met and worked with at the camp were great, great people.

Bob Nevitt camper, staff waiter, counselor 1962-1971 Memories: At Anawana, this only child from Queens learned how to "share", that good friends could become like family and that "teachers" come in all forms and ages and could do their best work outside a classroom. It is the place where I gained confidence, learned humility and learned to trust others while earning their trust. Its where, at 15, if you didn't make the AIT team you could still be the scorekeeper and where, at 20, you could make the traveling counselor basketball team on the strength of your 7 passenger 1968 Chevy Impala. But most important of all, it is the place where I had my heart broken on the squash court by my first love and the place where I found my best and last love, my wife Lois. Email Bob

Felicia Pianin camper, 78-85 Memories: so many memories... the one most important is those few everlasting friendships that have been made... Color War - AIT - intercamp games - first kiss behind the mess hall - Cropsy (wow just remembered about him) the shows during the summer (I actually had a two liner in all my years there) - girls sing (rehearsals YUCK)... trying to win stars to get a hat or t-shirt. My favorite star I received was the one when I fell off a log into the swamp when we were looking for frogs. Speaking of frogs, how long can they stay upside down before dying? Any answers... Well Erika and I found out that it doesn't take long, especially when you toss it up in the air and a car runs over it. Long hair and lots of knots (remember that Erika?), Nikky and Risa, can't forget you. The one thing I remember oddly enough and not much of a memory for anyone else, I was in a bunk and saw my sister's name on the ceiling (thought that was to cool especially since I was 9 and she was there back in the late 60's early 70's). The one most memorable thing I can remember is on visiting day our bunk was always the first to sign up for the following summer... I believe we did that for five or six years in a row. Comments: If I could go back and have the possibility of changing anything having to do with Camp Anawana and my years there... the only thing I would change, is that I would have continued to go for another few summers. I left the summer I would have been a waitress and I am sorry I ever did. I would also like to say that my brothers and sister attended Anawana many years before me, so if there is anyone out there looking for another Pianin you can contact me and I will let them know. Who would you like to contact? Erika, Nikky, Risa, Robin. I would love to hear from anyone interested in chatting and remembering and wanting to know the updates... Email Felicia

Scott Pianin camper 67-70 Memories: My memories are of Larry Parker playing 5-3-1 and always winning. Winning the AIT and being the MVP. Standing on line at the towel shack. Bobby Podolsky camper, waiter ... A friend of mine was looking through the Anawana website and said I was mentioned during a chat...asking where I was. I had no clue people from Anawana still kept in touch. I'm married with two children a son 14 years old and a daughter 10 years old, my son's name is Brett and my daughters name is Carly (aka CJ). My wife's name is Gaye - not Adelglass - and I'm married for 20 years. I live in Jericho, N.Y. on Long Island and work for UBS. Great Memories of being chased all over campus with Julie Cohen by Larry Parker and getting cornered in Jerry Parker's office by Larry and having Jerry save us, all because Julie pushed Larry and he fell over me while I was kneeling behind him. He wanted to kill us, I hope he was kidding. Miss ya ... Julie, Pugsley, Link, Gaye, Jill, Robin Email Bobby
