The name X-wing came from the crew of A New Hope, who referred to the then-unnamed ship as such during production |
One of the most famous and recognisable designs in the galaxy, the X-wing starfighter built up an impressive reputation as the Rebellions forefront snubfighter. It gained fame at the Battles of Yavin and Endor, and also through the iconic Rogue Squadron. Years after, the X-wing was still going strong, and proved it was one of the toughest starfighters ever made. The X-wing was so-called because of its split-X wing configuration. When entering battle mode, the S-foils would open, enabling greater accuracy in a fight, though in this mode, speed was hampered slightly. To compensate, the X-wing boasted strong deflector shields, giving the starfighters an edge over the weak TIE fighters they were often up against. The X-wing pilots also had considerably more firepower at their disposal; as well as a proton torpedo launcher in the nose, four laser cannons were mounted on each wingtip. These quad lasers could be fired independantly or in sync, either in dual or quad fire. Like most other starfighters, the X-wing was only large enough for a single pilot, though unlike Imperial fighters, there was room for an astro-droid near the ship's four engines. The astromech provided much needed navigational help, and could also preform repairs and system checks from its socket behind the cockpit. The look of the X-wing was based on earlier craft piloted during the days of the Republic, such as the Z-95 Headhunter. Subsequent models of the X-wing fighter upgraded the ship with sensors and advanced computers, though the design remained the same; as the X-wings were more than capable of flying rings around the highly-maneuverable TIE fighters, there was little point in a redesign. |
