Over the decades, the X-wing went through many
variations and upgrades, though each was able to
enhance the winning formula that had made such an
impact in the Rebellion.

The original X-wing, the T-65, was based on the
design of the Incom/Subpro Z-95 starfighter, and was
able to build on its foundations to create a much
stronger, more efficient fighter craft. The Alliance always
had precious few X-wing fighters compared to the
Empire's seemingly endless arsenal of TIE craft. As a
result, the X-wings were often in a state of constant use, and most showed the wear and tear that their
pilots would subject them to. Common models of fighters in the Galactic Civil War included the T-65B and the T-65C.

Rogue Squadron continued to use the T-65C for many years, though with the advent of starfighters such as the E-wing, Incom Corporation decided to upgrade the design. The T-65C-A2 was produced with many advancements.  While the T-65C could carry 110 kilograms of cargo, it's first advancement, the T-65A-C4, could carry 150 kilograms. Its sublight speed was upgraded to be almost as fast as the Alliance A-wing starfighter, considered to be the fastest starfighter in the fleet. The older X-wings were refitted into T-65BRs, or reconnaissance X-wings.

These recon fighters had advanced sensors in place of their missile systems, and were equipped with a sophisticated self-destruct sequence - the system wiped the ship's computer, destroyed the astromech with a shaped charge, killed the pilot with a lethal injection and then finally detonated a powerful baradium charge to finish off the starfighter and any other ship nearby.

After thirteen years of serving the New Republic, the X-wings were upgraded again, into the T-65D-A1. The new model did away with an astromech socket behind the cockpit, and instead featured an advanced computer system that integrated all the functions of the droid into one package. However, the introduction of the T-65D - and the order to update older X-wings with the same specs - was exploited by would-be terrorists. Each new computer system was equipped with a hidden explosive detonator, set to go off when a specific combination of computer commands was executed. This act grounded the New Republic X-wing arsenal for a time, and seriously hampered the success of the T-65D-A1 refit.

The latest model to be created for the New Republic was the XJ X-wing, which sported a trio of proton torpedo launchers as well as shield, armour and agility enhancements. Many XJ X-wings were used by members of the New Jedi Order during the Yuuzhan Vong invasion, notably during a Jedi mind-meld technique, whereby the Force would link the minds of the Jedi pilots to form one flowing consciousness.
