Lolita
1962 ***** 153 mins.
Lolita is a story of true perfection. Based on the novel by Vladimir Nabokov (who also wrote the screenplay), this story of love and obsession is at its absolute best in the hands of the great Stanley Kubrick. James Mason plays Humbert Humbert, a man who has just moved from Europe to the quiet town of Ramsdale, New Hampshire. There, he meets and falls in love with Dolores Haze. Lolita (played by Sue Lyon). He moves in as a lodger with Lolita and her mother. He marries the mother so he can stay around his true love--14-year-old Lolita. This film is a true work of art. Would Stanley Kubrick give us any less? Stanley perfectly balances the comedy and drama in this story of love, obsession, and loss that is, in my opinion, one of the greatest films in motion picture history. It didn't make my Top 25 list, but it sure came close.
