DAY OF THE FIGHT

**** 1951 16 mins.

Day of the Fight is a short documentary about a boxer named Walter Cartier as he goes about his day preparing for the fight that lies ahead. This film holds special historic value because it is the very first film from the legendary Stanley Kubrick. While it may not be of any great artistic value, it still holds a high level of importance, which is why it gets four stars.

FLYING PADRE

** 1951 9 mins.

Flying Padre is a short documentary about two typical days in the life of a priest named Fred Stadmueller. There's not much in the way of entertainment or interesting facts presented in this film. It's just another early Kubrick film, so it's worth a look.

THE SEAFARERS
1953 ** 30 mins.

The Seafarers is a short documentary about the Seafarers International Union. Kubrick's first colour film is nothing more that a bore-fest galore. It is a decently made documentary, but there's just nothing in it that holds the viewer's interest. I mean, how exciting can you make a bunch of sailors hanging around in their natural environment?

FEAR AND DESIRE
1953 ***1/2 68 mins.

Fear and Desire is Kubrick's first feature film. In it, four soldiers are trapped behind enemy lines and encounter odd happenings. I see this film as a kind of ancestral version of Apocalypse Now It's a truly interesting anti-war film that could use a bit of remastering.
