1974 ***** 131 mins.
Jack Nicholson is at his absolute best in this intelligent, intriguing detective story. Nicholson plays Jake Gittes, who takes on cases of spurned lovers. His most recent case, though, is not like all the others. The story of this film is so complex that I'm not going to even make an attempt at reiterating it. I highly recommend this film to those who appreciate great filmmaking. I will also make a special note that the music by Jerry Goldsmith is absolutely marvellous. Also, I must say that this film is much better the second time through (and in widescreen). Followed-up by The Two Jakes.
