Though the therapeutic values of music have been recognized and employed from a very early stage in the history of mankind, not enough work has been carried out scientifically to evaluate the efficacy of traditional Indian classical music in healing various ailments. Music is known to alleviate both acute and chronic ailments because of the efficacy of sound vibrations in affecting the mental and emotional states and in producing multiple physiological changes in the body. This may be related to the fact that the roots of the auditory nerves are more widely distributed and have more connections than any other nerves in the body.

In the West, studies have shown that post-operative patients recover faster when exposed to music therapy than those who are not. There it is often used as complementary therapy and not as a therapy by itself, as is done in the East.

How can music produce such effects?

Music can lead a person to a state of harmony. As all illness is caused by a disharmony, music can help in the healing process in the fullest sense, harmonizing all aspects of the being – the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual.

Looking at purely the physical effects, the biological rhythm of the body comes into contact with the external rhythm produced by music and reacts with it to produce amazing curative results. But, for this to happen the music should be soothing and played flawlessly. Discordant and cacophonous music played at ear-splitting decibels can have just the opposite effect.

Harmonious (consonant) and discordant (dissonant) chords, and different intervals between notes influence the pulse and respiration; some researchers believe that sustained chords lower the blood-pressure, and crisp, repeated chords raise it. Generally, muscular energy increases with the intensity and pitch of musical sounds. Harmonious rhythms can, depending on the tempo, be effective sedatives or stimulants; a piece of music with the tempo of a normal heart beat (60-80 beats per minute) soothes; rhythms which are slower then heart beat build suspense- it is as though the body anticipates the music will speed up. Fast rhythms raise the heart rate and excite the whole body.

Relation between pitch and feelings:

 There are seven musical notes-

Do       Re        Mi        Fa        Sol       La        Ti         - Western

Sa        Ri         Ga        Ma       Pa        Dha      Ni        - Indian

Scales are repeated at different octaves – higher or lower than each other. Usually, high notes are associated with lighter feelings, and lower tones with heavier feelings.
