One idiot from last night (Sunday night)..... On this program called "Around the Horn" on the sports-talk radio, this host was commenting on Vancouver's draft picks...one of whom was some kid with the last name Messier. And the host's idiotic comment was: "(the draft pick) is not related to Mark Messier. Thank goodness." What a retarded comment.... That host was obviously on drugs for making that kind of comment - dissing a HOFer and one of the NHL's all-time greats. The stupid Canucks should be lucky if this pick is HALF the player that #11 was. What an idiot and an equally retarded comment. Other stupid things on this show: 2) wasted time talking about the Nicole Brown benefit and how much it costs to hang out with the playboy bunnies and girls... how is THAT related to sports? 3) referred to Corey Schneider as Corey Hirsh (idiot) 4) called the show by the wrong name (dumb). Retarded program. And rest assured... I turned that thing off pretty quickly. I don't have time, and don't make time, listening to tools and fools talking about nonsense. On the topic of idiots, people complaining about the proposed rise in transit fares are just stupid. Sure, let's see if they can spend less money commuting using an alternative method of transportation. Seriously, if these clowns spend less money on Starbucks, beer, dresses/shoes, porn magazines, etc., just think of how much money they really have. And, you know what, if you don't like it here, then get the hell out... go live somewhere else and spread your negativity elsewhere. Taking the other side.... some bus drivers are idiots. Seriously, this guy (passenger, of course) was making loud noises at the back, saying things repeatedly, like "Shut up or I'll stab ya, hahaha" over and over again. "You better stab 'im" and rude comments loudly. And yet the gutless driver did nothing.... and kept driving. 20 minutes after the guy got off, then the bus driver started joking with someone at the front about him. Well, Mr. Gutless, if you knew he was causing problems, shouldn't you have kicked him off instead of making light of the situation? You sure know how to ensure safety on your buses, Loser. You should deserve some medal for that. Jerk. Dustin McGowan came close to a no-hitter against Colorado at Rogers Centre (formerly SkyDome). I went on the zonkboard to announce that there's one inning left! .... and we may see history! (I was watching the game and also listening to it on the radio throughout). Alas, the no-no was broken up in the 9th and of course, hahaha, people on the zonk claimed I jinxed him, which is one of those old superstitions. Oh well, close but no cigar. June 29-July 1 Jays in Seattle: Could have won 2 out of 3 this weekend but no..they got swept. And with Boston and NY both struggling, the Jays could have gained ground, but no... Today, Marcum had a 1-0 lead and yet the manager brought in the bullpen and gave up 2 runs to lose in the 9th. Frank Thomas hit #501 in the 7th inning and could have gotten more, with the bases loaded and 1 out and Royce Clayton at the plate. Unfortunately, this is 2007 and not 1993, so Clayton hit into a DP to end the threat in the 7th. And yesterday Doc Halladay lost 8-3 despite allowing just 3 runs in 6 innings. When your ace loses, that's not good. Dynasties and re-matches: Stanley Cup finals 1983 and 1984: NYI swept Edm in 4 games in 1983, but when the teams met again in '84, the Oilers were stronger and got their revenge to win their first Cup, over the Isles. 1985 and 1987: Edm beat Phi easily in 1985, in 5 games. In the rematch, in 1987, the Flyers at least were able to take Edm to a 7th game before narrowly losing the game 3-1. So, the Flyers improved since their first trip. 1986 and 1989: Another rematch: In '86, Calgary lost to Montreal in 5 games. When the same two teams met again in '89, the Flames got their revenge on Forum ice. So, in the first 3 cases of rematches in the '80s, the losing team made vast improvements.... now in this last example to close out the decade..... 1988 and 1990: Edmonton swept Boston in 5 games (with one suspended tie game) in 1988 - Gretzky's last season in Alberta.... and when the two teams squared off in 1990, Boston had the advantage with home-ice, and without Gretzky, but the result was more one-sided. 2-3, 2-7, 2-1, 1-5, 1-4. Not even close in the last 2 games. In the first game, it was a loss in triple OT (despite Boston outplaying them), in the 2nd contest, Boston dominated but were down 3-2 by the middle of the game, and went on to lose. So what the lesson here is: Teams that get a second shot to get revenge, usually gets it. But Boston turned out to be a failure, bucking that trend... In 2007, the Ducks got the "revenge" when they finally won the Cup after losing in 2003. In 2006 in baseball, St. Louis won after losing in 2004. Carolina lost the Cup finals in 2002 but won in 2006. The '04 Red Sox won after losing in the '03 ALCS dramatically... Only the 1990 Bruins failed. Actually, looking at the recent past, these teams "failed" too: Oakland A's, Chicago Cubs, Houston Astros, Mets, St. Louis Blues, and a few others...
