CITY PLANNING The city plan of Kotagede has specific characteristic. There are Palace, Alun-alun (square) , traditional buildings and roads crossing each other in the town centre. All of them become rectengle forms (Tjandrasasmita 1975:5-8). Besides, the specific characteristics of Kotagede may be seen from it`s toponym of the housing. There are many changes of the function of the architectire of the housing nowadays, e.g. : Alun-alun is now full of houses, the palace building has become a graveyard with houses around it. The centre of the towns is not the palace any more but the market. The market itself is still the centre of the city nowadays. It is one of the elements of catur tunggal of the city plan of concepts of Javanese tradition : Palace, Alun-alun, Mosque, and Market with a constant pattern. Although, nowadays, there are many changes of function of the architecture generally. The City Plan of Kotagede, still reflect the early structure when it was build. The wall around the palace and the wall around the town still could be founded. In the past, there is moat (jagang) outside the walls of the Palace. The moat surounding the palace, nowadays become road network of villages (Kampung Dalem and Kampung Kedaton) around the sites of the Palace. Beside the kampungs there is also Kampung Ledhok. The name Ledhok refer that there is moat in the location at the past. The moat surronding the city nowadays become rice field especially in the east of the city. There is exmoat in the Kampung Tinalan, nowadays become Sendok Indah housing complex. The name of Sendok Indah come from the Basen Ledhok. There is Gadjah Wong river in the west of the city the has doubled functions, beside as a river which give water to the moat but also as a moat in the west of the city itself. From the name of the kampung, we can see that crowded housing of the people lay in surounding of the palace, market and main road ring. The name of Kampungs refer to the group of the society based on profession, social status, the name of the person or agriculural activity of the people who live in some area. The name of the kampungs have influenced to the city plan of Kotagede. In the east of Kotagede market, Kampung Pandean (pande means blacksmiths), Kampung Boharen (Buchari the name of the founder of the Kampung), Kampung Selokraman (Selokromo means a pair of stone). In the south and south east of Kotagede market, Kampung Alun-alun, Kampung Kedaton and Kampung Dalem refer to archeological sites of the Palace. In north of Kotagede market kampung Lor Pasar (a house of Senopati before becoming King and who had nickname Hangabehi Loring Pasar meaning The Lord of the North Market), Kampung Prenggan (Prince Pringgalaya). In the west of the market there are Kampung Sayangan (Sayang means copper smiths), Kampung Jagalan (Jagal means the place of abatoir). Outside of primary Kotagede area : Kampung Tegalgendu. In the past, there was a community called Kalang who had the skills in architecture in the Mataram era. They had a position of Demang Kalang. They had duties to control the physical condition of buildings and to supervise Kalang community. The Kalang community lived in Kampung Tegalgendu in the west of Gajah Wong river ; the outside of Kotagede. |
