Historically speaking , Kotagede was the centre of Mataram Kingdom in 1586 when it was founded. Kotagede has the authority of the centre of Javanese tradition, as there is a graveyard of the founder of Mataram Kingdom . There are many archeological remains such as an altar of the King, named Hastarengga Graveyard, the Great Mosque, Seliran (bathrooms for the King�s wifes).



Sejarah mengatakan. Kotagede adalah pusat kerajaan Mataram pada tahun 1586. Ketika ditemukan, Kotagede mempunyai kekuasaan sebagai pusat tradisi Jawa, seperti adanya pemakaman pendiri kerajaan Mataram (Panembahan Senopati), peninggalan arkeologis seperti altar raja, yang disebut pemakaman Hastorenggo, Masjid Besar Mataram, Seliran (tempat mandi selir raja).

Secara etnis, berdasarkan faktor sosio demografis, Kotagede adalah kota Jawa asli. Jumlah penduduknya 9.862 orang menurut sensus penduduk pada tahun 1930. Orang-orang Jawa sendiri didalamnya sejumlah 99,49 %. Hal itu menempati jumlah terbesar kedua dari penduduk asli/pribumi Jawa di Indonesia setelah kota Kedawung di Jabar yang memiliki 99,60% orang Jawa asli. Sekarang ini, penduduk Kotagede kira-kira berjumlah 19.000 dengan jumlah presentasi orang Jawa asli yang sama dengan tahun 1930. (sumber : Kecamatan Kotagede)

Javanese people themselves are 99,49 %. It was the second largest number of the Javanese indigenous people in Java. The first range was Kedawung town in West Java that had 99,60 % Javenese indigenous people. Nowadays, the people of Kotagede are about 19,000 with the same precentage of Javanese indigenous people as that in 1930.
