Ocular Trauma :

Worldwide, there are approximately 1.6 million people blind from eye injuries, 2.3 million bilaterally vision impaired and 19 million with unilateral vision loss1; this being one of the commonest cause of unilateral blindness today.

Developing countries like India, carry the largest burden, yet are the least able to afford the costs. A majority of these injuries are minor and only 2-3% require hospitalisation. Noteworthy is the fact that of the patients hospitalised, over 10% will lose useful vision in the injured eye.

The primary aim of trauma management is to save the eye, secondary aim is to restore useful vision.

In India, lax laws related to workplace safety, inferior quality windscreens, non usage of helmets and the very recently introduced laws of seat-belt usage have determined the common causes of ocular trauma to be largely related to the workplace and to road traffic accidents.

The timing of injury and the time elapsed between injury & seeking expert advice -- in hours is of utmost importance, not only from the point of view of final visual outcome but it also holds immense medico-legal value.

Ocular Trauma once described as a "Neglected Disorder" is STILL a neglected disorder in India.
