In chapter 3 Gavanariel, Belethorn and Separado are the most important perons.
It appears that the assassin has escaped. Separado and Gavanariel go to the portal chamber. There the assassin arrives and gets caught again. There are also Human messengers with messages for Gavanariel. The messages are about the things that happened in the passageway.
Separado is told to go to the commander of the army and ask if he can send some warriors in the passageway. There he finds out that Eleandras has to go with them. He behaved badly during his trainings.
Separado goes to find Eleandras. At his home, his mother doesn't know where he is, but his brother, Belethorn does. It seems that Belethorn turned Eleandras in a silver colored bug in some way. They go to the University where Gavanariel turns Eleandras back in his normal self.
Eleandras reports at the commander and goes in the passageway. Separado goes to a gypsy to get his future predicted. Then he hears from Anarion that Gavanariel is in hospital. He decides to visit him and give him a letter from another messenger.
When he's back at the University, he can't enter. He sees some runes written on the door. He translates them and he can get in. Inside he prepares to take care of Valerine and Ashna.
