MACEDONIA WHO

14.10.02                                                                                                                                       Previous Page           Next Page

I couldn’t get up to watch the England game on Sunday morning (3 o’clock in the morning!) and thus caught the repeat telecast on Sunday night.  My first impression was “what an awful pitch!”  No wonder Owen and co struggled against the Slovakians.  You just couldn’t string any series of decent passes together in such conditions.  Stevie G was guilty for conceding the first goal to Nemeth as he gave up chasing the ball at the bye-line, failing to realise that the ball would roll slower in the heavy conditions.

St Mike had a hand, or rather 2 heads, on both goals.  His first attempted header missed the ball, which he admitted later, but it did confuse the keeper enough to lead to the goal.  The second goal was lucky as a series of mistakes by the defenders presented the chance to Owen.  Credit to him, as Owen was his usual self with the highest alertness in the penalty box.

Other Liverpool lads-wise, Hyppia scored the 3rd goal against Azerbaijan, and Riise played in their country’s respective wins. Latvia pulled off a shock 1-0 victory in Poland as CSKA Moscow midfielder Juris Laizans (who?) beat Jerzy Dudek with a thumping 20 metre shot on 30 minutes after the goalkeeper had made a superb save moments earlier.

Generally a good weekend for us.  No injuries reported, that’s an important piece of good news as we will be facing Leeds at Elland Road this weekend.  Hopefully, things will remain the same after the mid-week international matches.

England will face Macedonia this Wednesday.  If you have read the scum head’s doggie’s book aka. Roy Keane’s book, “it” mentioned that the Irish lost to the Macedonians.   Yes, I do read some scums books (I have the scum head’s book in my house) as I strongly believe that you need to know your competitors’ strengths and weaknesses in order to beat them.

Will the Macedonians beat England at St Mary’s Stadium (Southampton’s home ground)?  I think not.  Although Macedonia took the lead against Turkey and was unlucky to concede 2 goals later, they will find it hard against England who will have “home” advantage this time round.  Certainly, the pitch will be better and the crowd more favourable, considering the racial abuses that Heskey and Cole received over the weekend.

Sticking my neck out for the prediction:  Owen 3, Macedonia 0!

Ciao!
