...[you move like i want to]...

my vitriol. needs no explanation. but i'll give you one anyway.

most people i know have their heroes. nirvana. radiohead. the pixies. deftones. huge bands, who are/were inaccessible and distant as a result of their success but still manage to touch people because of the music they make, the feeling contained within each note. i like most of those bands, but none of them were ever my heroes. the closest i've ever had to a musical hero was shirley manson of garbage, they got me into alternative music in a big way [where before i liked the odd soundgarden/aerosmith track on mtv] and she - well she's just so fucking cool isn't she? but until recently i'd never come across a band that just re-affirmed everything, realised everything i wanted music to be.

then my vitriol. came across them on radio 1 at the end of '99, then saw them supporting my then-favourite band feeder @ the nme show, astoria. i wasn't blown away. i thought they were quite good, but i missed most of their set and they didn't really stick in my mind. then i went to see cay. my vitriol were supporting again. i watched their entire set and was highly impressed. spoke to som afterwards; he seemed surprised and chuffed that i actually knew who he was [as opposed to getting his autograph just cos he'd been on the stage earlier].

i saw them a few more times over the next few months; their headline show at the garage in july was a turning point. musically, they razed the place to the ground. i started to think that one day they could become my favourite band. three days later they did. they supported a perfect circle at the forum, and went down like a lead balloon. in response to the dead crowd they hurled a mindblowingly defiant performance in their faces, then som chucked a bottle of water over the front of the crowd and leapt over their heads into the arms of a few luckily placed my vitriol fans. at that point i thought "THIS is what it's all about." no band's ever hit my mind full-on like my vitriol did at those two shows. as i write this i have now seen my vitriol over 30 times; by the time some of you read this i may well have seen them a few more times.
