Holidays are wonderful but not always easy to organise with three or four dogs that insist on coming along with you. As I'm incapable of spending more than one night without the girls, we found ourselves confronted by a real problem which eventually led to the purchase of a caravan. After 16 years of towing it round Europe, we changed it for a motorhome. We now have our second motorhome, which is fondly known as "the Beast".
On the Atlantic coast in 2001 We generally manage to drive over to the Atlantic, Britanny and Normandy before the main holiday season starts, which means we don't have to reckon with too much heat and can always find a peaceful spot, generally near the beach - I'm lucky if I can persuade Alf to let me drive inland at all!
Bunnie looking out of the window
Funny Girl and her daughter, Kittie - with Bunnie in the middle. That was Kittie's first summer en route with us and still in her puppy-coat. It's amazing how easily they take to our nomadic way of life but we do try to drive short distances and find overnight spots where they can have a good run.
Unmistakably a tourist
Port Grimaud, Côte d'Azur in the Spring - a trip we usually manage to do after the litter of the year has left us for their new homes. Port Grimaud is an artificial copy of Venice, with houses built around canals and bridges leading from one part of the village to another. It's a bit of a novelty but very trippery, all right at Easter but not to be advised in the summer!
In the Camargue, possibly our favourite area down south.
.... and here with friends on the lac de Ste Croix, in Provence.
Provence is also famous for its "santons" which are dolls, originally made by the villagers as presents for the Christmas cribs of their friends and relatives. Today these are on offer in lots of souvenir shops and the quality varies, the better ones being really expensive. In Maussane there is a delightful santon museum where this photo was taken.
Plateau de Valensole, a photo taken from a friend's kitchen window.
French markets are fascinating and you can spend hours walking around some of the bigger ones.
Here we found a delightful spot for us and the cockers, way up in the hills by a resevoir:
and below, a typical beach on the Atlantic coast:
.... where temperatures rose to 38°C and had us all panting!
Here on the island Ré, another spot which we love but which we prefer to leave before summer holidays begin!
Very often we stop
at Charmes, on a popular motorhome park, on our way home - one of the
many French places on canals, where holiday boats stop for the night,
too. Peace before the storm: back home there's the Beast to empty and the contents to be washed and ironed, carpets cleaned etc. The garden is crying out for attention ........................... and hardly have we done all that, we're planning the next trip! The advantage of being OAPs at last!
