| Long before the US entered WWII it had a chance to test and prove its tanks on battlefields in North Africa. Great Britain received a great number of US tanks through the lend lease program. Unlike other nations, the US put few tank models into mass production. To keep things universal and simplified for production, a few models were chosen, and then concentrated on. Basically the US had two types of tanks, medium and light. The M3 and later the M5 and M24 proved valuable in the light tank/reconnaissance roll, while the Grant(for a short time) and Sherman provided the back bone for most allied armored formations for the duration of the US involvement. While it is easy to argue that the Sherman was far from the best tank, it was simple quantity that won the day, and the mass produced Sherman was able to overcome any opposition German armor could put up through strength in numbers. |
