While many believed that by 1943, the Sherman would carry the allies through the rest of the war, others saw the need for a heavier more capable main battle tank, a tank that could compete with German Panthers and Tigers.  Many different models made the prototype stage, featuring many different armaments.  They varied from 76mm guns to 105mm guns.  Eventually a compromise was reached with the 90mm gun.  The Pershing had decent armor, and a powerful gun, and was really the only American tank that could match up to the best the Germans had.  Unfortunately few made it to Europe in time to make a difference in the war, although those few that did reach the front proved themselves useful in tackling the fleeting remains of the German panzer force.
