History:  Entered US service 1942.  Most common medium tank of WWII.  Widely used by countless armies.

A day after the M3 Grant was accepted as the standard American medium tank, work began on a new model to replace it.  That model was to become the M4 Sherman, the most prolific and widely used tank of the war.  Many different models of Shermans were made.  Some of the most important advances were the addition of a more powerful 76mm gun, the increasing of armor, and the adding of an improved suspension system(HVSS).  Further improvements included the addition of a 17 pounder gun by the British, and a 105mm howitzer version for close support.  The Sherman proved itself on countless battlefields as a reliable and agile medium tank.  Also, it was highly adoptable, and relatively easily mass produced.  For these reasons, it is considered that tank that won the war for the allies, even though it was by no means the best.
