| M3 Grant/Lee Medium Tank Crew: 6 Armament: 1 75mm gun, 1 37mm gun, 4 .30 cal mg's Armor: 37mm maximum, 12mm minimum Weight: 27,300 kg Performance: 26 mph road speed, 120 miles range History: Entered US service 1941. Served with British, Canadian, Russian armies As the US observed events happening in Europe in the 1939-1940, it quickly realized that the current main tank gun, the 37mm, was wholly inadequate. So the idea was put forth to mount a 75mm gun on the existing M2 medium tank. Thus the M3 was born. The 75mm gun was mounted on a sponson mounting on the right side of the hull. This type of mounting had many disadvantages, the biggest being a narrow field of fire, but the 37mm gun in a top turret was retained, and this gave the Grant substantial firepower. This advance in tank firepower played an important part in later British offensives in North Africa. The Grant was the first time the British had equal footing with the German Mk. IV, and served well in many allied armies for a short period before being replaced by the Sherman. It should also be noted that the Grant was the first tank to be mass produced by a converted auto industry. |
