Minions (demon version of vampire ghouls) are our servants and what each Petitioner starts as. Demon "dark Matter" is collected and injected into the mortal/vampiric body. This begins the change within the host body, allowing them to begin to learn the first few low level powers of the powers of Nite Bane and Dark Bane. Along with this, the body of the host begins to gain the ability to shift to shadow form at will, as per the demon. This is one of the first parts of their training is learning to control the new demon body.
