What is a Role-Playing Game?
A role-playing game (RPG) lets you play a role, like an actor on a stage. But unlike, an actor, a role-player doesn't read from a script. Instead of a stage, you use your imagination to construct a setting. You adopt the role of a character and guide them through a series of adventures or scenarios described to you by a referee (also usually called a Game Master, or GM). Your character doesn't have to be you, or anything like you. You don't even have to play a human, depending on what RPG you're playing.
In essence, you are playing "make believe," like you probably did when you were a child. The only difference is that a rulebook exists which will tell you how to resolve an outcome. For instance, you can't just say "I shoot you" because no doubt whoever you're shooting will say "Did not." The rules exist to help give you a realistic fallback to determining how well your character can shoot someone, climb a ledge, cast a spell, find a trap, or survive a fall.
