Club News

Newsletter:

3rd Quarter 2002

See Activities for upcoming calendar events.

Welcome new members:  Martin Medovic (sponsor his sister, Deby Smith).  Thanks to the efforts of Warren McKeen and the membership committee, lunch faxes are being sent weekly to area businesses.  One new member application has been received.

Official membership count is 91.  Keep 'em coming!

The Jackpot is now over $600.00.  Buy your tickets!
(Only members are eligible to win the big jackpot.   If a guest's ticket is drawn, the winnings will be 50% of that week's collection only.)

The newsletter will be handed out at meetings to members present.  Newsletters will be mailed to those not signed in at the club meeting.

Board News:  At the August meeting, the board voted to channel the 50/50 monies into the Administrative account retroactively.  Any fundraising activity which solicits members only may be put into Administrative.  The Administrative account is running low due to insurance costs, high lunch expenses and delinquent dues.

The Board agreed that sponsorship of the WJU Circle K will be considered, if the AM Club is unable to continue sponsoring.  Also the board voted to help start up and sponsor a new Key Club at Magnolia High School in New Martinsville.  The Wetzel-Tyler Club will be asked to co-sponsor.

Delinquent dues were addressed at the board meeting.  Offenders will be receiving phone calls and letters.

New Officers for the coming 2002-2003 year:  2nd VP Dave Ransom; Treasurer Bill Busick; Board Members: Anita Gongola and Bill Ihlenfeld will return to the board for new 3-year terms; and Pam Butterworth will be new on the board for a 3-year term.  To fill Dave Ransom's remaining 2 years in October, Jan Shelburne has been recommended as Dave's replacement.

Tim Reed and Barb Fisher served as Club delegates at the House of Delegates at  International Convention in New Orleans.  Jan Shelburne was the alternate.

Barb attended the incoming president's training.  Check out the newsletter for other convention news.  Amendments and resolutions passed may be read in their entirety at www.kiwanis.org

The Board recently approved a reimbursement to the Fresh Air Farm caretaker Deke Stein of $425.  Deke has been performing jobs beyond the scope of his caretaker duties, such as backhoe excavation.

The Program Committee has been hard at work this year.  We are into the 10th month of our new Program Committee organization, and comments from members seem to indicate that it is considered a success.  The first  10 months' programs were covered by Rita Castle, Chuck Graham, George Dakovic, Sr. Mary Palmer, Dave Ransom, Ann Diotti, Dave Ellwood, Russell Dunkin, Becky Johnen and Ron Wickham.

Bring any ideas or contacts you have to any of these committee members to assist in quality programs.  Barb Fisher is the chair of the Program Committee thru September.

Instituting a Program Committee was an action taken by the 2000-2001 Board, removing the burden of programs from the 2nd VP.  The Board felt  this new plan would bring high quality programs, involve more club members for better retention and make it easier to recruit for position of 2nd VP

The Annual 2002 Fundraiser was held on February 14 at Ernie's Esquire and was a great success.  There were 5 cash winners at the end, which included Dave Ellwood, Anita Gongola and Keith Meyers.  Many doorprizes were presented to guests.

A January social was enjoyed at Wheeling Downs; the evening was a benefit for Big Brothers/Big Sisters.

Greet the Club Greeting CommitteeChair:  Jeanette Wojcik, Maria Busick, Pam Butterworth, Russell Dunkin,  Mary Ann Lockmer, Janet Roset, Jenn Shelburne, Kristian White, Kathleen Meeker and Deby White.  These are some of our newer members, so we can greet them too and help them get to know us.

Newer members will be asked to rotate into the Greeting Committee while current greeters may be asked to join other committees.  Getting involved will enrich your Kiwanis experience and you'll have fun!  Join in!

Division News:
A division meeting was held July 9 at Weirton.  Tim, Barb and Jan attended from our Club.
The AM Club reports that they may reorganize on October 1 and become a cyberclub.  A new sponsor may be needed for the WJU Circle K.  Also Magnolia High School in New Martinsville is wanting to organize a Key Club.

Clubs all over the state are to bring a Community Service poster of their favorite community service project.  This is not a contest, but is to provide other clubs with ideas for projects.  Each club is to bring a step-by-step outline for how to do the project.

District Governor John B. Knight visited our division in January 2002 in Wellsburg.  In spite of bad weather the event was well attended and John's remarks were welcomed by all.

District News:  New officers were elected and installed at the District Convention:
Governor: Dr John B Knight, Huntington
Governor-elect:  Dr Ray Richardson, Fairmont
Secretary: Dr Bernard Knott
Treasurer:  David Fuller
Div 1 Lt. Gov:  Janice Stewart, Wellsburg
These individuals took office October 1, 2001.

The WV District adopted a Strategic Plan, the results of 7 months of meetings and planning in 2000-2001.  The Plan is a working document that will aid the District in becoming stronger.
