Generation No. 2

2.    James Abel17 GATES (Abel16, Nathan15, Simon14, Amos13, Simon12, Stephen11,
        Stephen
10, Thomas9, Peter8, Geoffrey7, Geoffrey6, Geoffrey5, William4, Geoffrey3,
William2, Thomas1) was born January 17, 1826 in Pike County, Missouri, and
died April 30, 1910.  He married Elizabeth LOVETT. She was born 1831,
       and died June 11, 1898.

Notes for James Abel GATES:

(1) He was Civil War Veteran and was Abel Gates' first child; born in Pike County Missouri.

(2) James was a Civil War Veteran, a member of Capt. Good's Co., B, 39th Infantry Volunteers of Missouri. His son, Nolan, also volunteered. James signed a "Parent's Consent", Nolan being only 16 years old. Nolan was left a twisted cripple following service and died at 25 years of age. The family lived in 1000 Hills section west of Kirksville, Missouri, and apparently were members of Union Church of the United Brethren. Another son, Peter, moved to the Northwest where it is said he helped organize the First Lumberman's Union. Two others plied their trade as woodsmen in Missouri - James and Frank. James youngest son, Jasper Newton, belonged to the Missouri Home Guard and was a recruiter during and after World War I. All of James' children were described as tall, fair skinned, with light or medium brown hair, showing some red, inherited from their Grandmother Burns, an Irish lady.

(3) James' descendants are widely scattered, but many are yet to be found in Northeast Missouri, with family names such as Hunsaker, Palmer, Williams, Zinnert, Kuntz, Hobbs, Ashley, James, Walker and many others. A reunion is held in Burlington, Iowa each year in August in a section of Crapo Park. Many of James' descendants also attend the Aseph Gates reunion held at 1000 Hills State Park, west of Kirksville, Missouri each year in September.  (From "Abel Gates, his Ancestors and His Descendants")

Notes for Mary Elizabeth GATES:

(1) Mary is the second child of Abel Gates. She was born in Pike County, Missouri and was married in Kirksville, Missouri to Elcana D. Hensley on November 15, 1845. They later move to Washington State and lived near Mount Vernon. For a time they also lived in Castle Rock, Washington. Mary and her husband are buried in the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Mount Vernon. In April 1888 they moved to the old ranch 2 1/2 miles East of Mount Vernon, near Grandma Mary (GATES) HENSLEY'S place. Mary HENSLEY was a sister of Thomas, Newton, John, and Jasper GATES of Mount Vernon (Washington) who also came from Missouri. They moved here in the 1870's. Mount Vernon was Uncle Jasper GATES' farm. A few stores were along the river bank. (Mr.) ENGLISH was the storekeeper.

From the publication, "Abel Gates, His Ancestors, His Descendants" --

Sarah_Turner.JPG (44909 bytes)

In the Abel Gates publication, this photo identified the woman as Sarah Ann Gates (married to William P. Moore); child as Grace (last name unknown).  My inherited copy has corrected this to read: Sarah Turner Gates and the child as Grace Marl.  A "Moore" cousin verifies the correction.

"John was a Civil War Veteran who saw service with the Confederate Army. Following the war he was married to Sarah TURNER, a native of South Carolina. Like his brothers, he took a land grant in the Oregon Territory (now Washington State), and brought up his family near Mt. Vernon. His white hair and beard were distinguishing features and it is said that they were white from a very early age. John is credited as a good neighbor, good farmer, and a man of good deeds. He and Sarah are buried in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery at Mt. Vernon................."

Notes for Aseph Wells GATES:

(1) Aseph was Abel Gates' tenth;  born in Adair County, Missouri. Aseph married Mary J. SHOLLEY at Kirksville, Missouri on February 16th, 1873. The family lived at Stahl, Missouri (West of Kirksville) and many of Aseph's descendants are to be found around that area, but many more are living in other parts of the Midwest, west and southwest. He was a very successful farmer and his children own some of the finest farmland in Missouri.

(2) [At the writing of this publication], a reunion is held annually in September at 1000 Hills State Park west of Kirksville on Missouri Highway 6. It was at a reunion there that our genealogy began to expand into what we have today. Through the help of Aseph's daughter, Zula (GATES) Novinger, we got on the trail of Aseph's brothers who pioneered in the Oregon Territory. This tiny lady's remarkable memory served to find many relatives who had not been heard from for many years. At this point the author gives a SPECIAL SALUTE to this dear lady and her husband, Jacob NOVINGER, himself a member of a very distinguished family.

It must be stated that Aseph's entire family cooperated in a magnificent manner to make this section of our book possible. Dofa HERNDON was of special assistance.  (Excerpt from publication: "Abel Gates, His Ancestor, His Descendants")

I don't know why Family Tree Maker listed Thomas last.   One of those computing ponderables.  Oh well. . .  -k-

Notes for Thomas GATES:

(1) Abel Gates Eighth Child - Thomas Gates, born in Cole County Missouri

(2) "Thomas served in the 39th Regiment, Company B, Missouri Infantry, during the Civil War. He was described as six feet two inches tall, with red hair, blue eyes, and twenty-one years old. After his army service he was married to Martha J. WALTERS at Kirksville, Missouri on March 25th, 1869. Thomas pioneered in the Oregon Territory (Now Washington State), working in timber at first, then as a farmer once land was cleared. In 1909 he moved to Conrad, Montana, in Teton County. Like his brothers, Thomas has many descendants in and about Washington. It has been said that one must use great tact in talk of the pioneers of Mt. Vernon because so many folks are related. Both Thomas and Martha are buried in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery at Mount Vernon....."  (Note from publication: "Abel Gates - His Ancestors, His Descendants")

Endnotes

"Abel Gates - His Ancestors, His Descendants" (1793-1870), Private Publication. Printed by Dinner and Klein of Seattle in 1976 -- A great deal of work went into this publication. However, because it seldom gives official documentation sources, any data from this publication should be treated with caution. (Kathryn Curtis Martin).
