The morning came far too quickly. I don’t remember falling asleep, but I wake up in my quarters. Alone. Funny, I haven’t spent a night alone in a long while.

Harry will be here any minute. He’s taking his role as best man very seriously, I could say too seriously but I don’t want to hurt his feelings. There are mere hours until the wedding. Hours. I feel sick.

I’ve been here before. In the middle of a decision that could go either way and neither way is a happy ending. Who are you kidding, Tom, you gave up happy endings years ago. So what’s the answer, this time? Why does it always come down to the easy answer and….the right one?

The chime sounds. “Come.” Harry walks in with a spring in his step and a smile on his face. You’d think he was getting married today.

“Tom, you look a little pale. We weren’t out that late last night….don’t tell me you sneaked in to see B’Elanna…” My expression must have betrayed me. “Tom? Are you okay?”

“It’s nothing Harry.” My best friend and the one man I could never really confide in. His universe is just brighter than mine…

“Okay, if you say so.” He smiles like he doesn’t believe me, but he won’t press. He never does. “Well, here we are, your last morning as a single man….what do you want for breakfast?”

“I don’t know, Harry, you choose.”

“You know, Tom, for the happiest day of your life you sure are down. Are you certain there’s nothing you want to talk about?” He looks really concerned, poor kid. Maybe I don’t give him enough credit. There’s a lot more to Harry than meets the eye despite his Harry “Read Me Like a Book” Kim reputation.

“Harry, have you ever loved someone so much you would do anything they asked of you?”

He looked thoughtful for a moment. “I don’t know. I thought so. But when I see what you have with B’Elanna…when I see the way she looks at you…then I think I don’t know anything about love.” He looks apologetic. “I guess that doesn’t help much.”

“Not much, no.” I agree ruefully. The way she looks at me. God, I hate myself. “Harry, I’m going to tell you something I’ve never told anyone. The someone I love asked me not to. I don’t really want to betray her, but I can’t go through with this if…” I look up into Harry’s eyes. I see real concern now. “I just don’t want to hurt her.”

“Her who, Tom?” he asks quietly, a dawning comprehension joins the concern in his eyes. “B’Elanna or the ‘someone you love’?”
