Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040 (Remake of Bubblegum Crisis): In the future, androids called Boomers have been built by the GENOM corporation to replace humans in all manual labor jobs. The only problem is, the Boomers have gone crazy, and now they're trying to take over the city of Mega-Tokyo. Enter the Knight Sabers, four young women with powered armor (hardsuits), who have taken it upon themselves to fight back against the Boomers. They are the only ones with a chance of saving Mega-Tokyo, and the human race...

Now, I've only seen a little bit of this series, but the very first episode I saw focused on Priss, and she's been my favorite ever since. I don't know what it is, but sometimes you just have this instant dislike for the, ah, cutesy characters (*cough* Nene *cough*) in a series like this. It would be like throwing ChibiUsa into an episode of Gundam Wing. No matter what the fanfic crossover community would like us to believe, she just doesn't fit. And the other two Knight Sabers aren't much better. When you're going for a cyberpunk feel, Sylia's too...(elegant? serene? simutaneously distant and overemotional?)...something. And to be blunt, in the (admittedly few) episodes I've seen, Linna doesn't have enough personality to distinguish her from any of the poor slobs getting killed by the Boomers (you know, the ones that only survive for about 3 seconds?), much less the furniture. Hmm, maybe Priss's attitudes rubbed off a little? I'm usually so sappy, but for this one I just loved the sarcastic, mercenary, rough-edged Priss. (And she sings, too!)

Magic Knight Rayearth (a.k.a. Rayearth): (Note: if you watch the OAVs, the characters are mostly the same, but the story is completely different.) On a school trip to Tokyo Tower, three young girls are summoned to the world of Cephiro by Princess Emeraude to become the Legendary Magic Knights, since the legend says that they must come from another world. Emeraude is the Pillar of Cephiro, meaning that her prayers and will are in control of the country and keep it peaceful. In Cephiro, will is everything; it controls magic, the land, and the future. According to Guru Clef, the master magician of Cephiro (and the first person the girls see after being summoned), Emeraude has been kidnapped by Zagato, the former High Priest of Cephiro, who had been pledged to help the Princess with her prayers. The only way to defeat Zagato is to summon the Mashin (ancient elemental gods), the only people who can summon the Mashin are the Legendary Magic Knights...and the only one who can send the girls home again is Princess Emeraude...

I can understand now why CLAMP manga are so popular. In case you haven't heard of them, CLAMP are a group of four mangaka (manga artists), who have created manga such as Magic Knight Rayearth, Card Captor Sakura, X, RG Veda, and Angelic Layer. Their work is gorgeous, and they do everything, including the backgrounds, themselves (I like them so much, I'm building a mini-shrine to them. Yay!). With that said, I also have to say that MKR has taken over as my favorite series (very close race with the Sailormoon manga), and it was pretty hard to beat the other series I've talked about here. Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu are some of the most likeable characters I've ever seen. I never can decide which I like the most, but I don't think you're supposed to. In fact, it would almost spoil the series (for me, anyway) to try. If they were real, I don't think the three of them would like it for anyone to say that one was better than the others. Just don't read the ending without tissues. We're talking angst by the bucketful here, but it's worth it. ^_^
