Card Captor Sakura:  A ten-year-old girl, Kinomoto Sakura, accidentally releases a deck of magical cards from a book in her father's basement.  The guardian of the book, Keroberos, tells her that she must become the Card Captor and get the cards back, using a magical wand that can seal the spirits back into their card forms and bind them to her.  Her best friend Tomoyo finds out, and decides to create battle costumes for her and videotape all of her adventures.  Sakura finds out from Kero-chan that the cards were created by an ancient magician named Clow Reed, and interesting things happen when one of his direct descendants shows up in town and tries to capture the Clow Cards himself...

I believe I mentioned that I'm a sucker for sap, and that might explain why I love Sakura and Syaolan so much.  They're only children, yes, but they're just so dang cute!  My second favorite anime couple because of what Syaolan does to help Sakura defeat the Void card...and what he says to her on the bridge, afterward.  To me, the huge chop-and-slash the dubbers did on that one scene with the Void  is the most unforgivable thing about the entire dub of this show, called "Cardcaptors."  As you might guess from the new title, the dub tried to move the focus away from Sakura and make Syaolan equally important.  I don't necessarily object to seeing more of him, but it makes me just a little upset because the show is supposed to be about Sakura, and it makes me angry that they'd change the show's whole focus just to appeal to a "wider target audience," meaning boys, because apparently girls in the US don't watch enough cartoons to support the show as written, and of course no American boy would ever watch a show where the girl is the hero-
Sorry, turned into the obssesed ranting fan for a minute there.  The fact is, this is a really cute show, and you should watch it. ^_^
P.S. I know quite a few "American boys" who love this show, and are even more angry about the changes than I am, so there!
Digimon (Digital Monsters):  I've only seen the English dub of this show, but it's pretty good (much better than that horrid dub of Pokemon), despite using some fairly cheesy (and sometimes just plain weird) slang expressions to try to make the characters' mouth movements match up with the dialogue.  It starts out with a group of kids that get transported to another world and partnered up with CFMs* called "Digimon" (as if you couldn't guess...^_^) which is short for Digital Monsters.  The kids discover that they can cause the Digimon to transform into larger, more powerful creatures in order to defend themseves and the children from various evil Digimon.  Now, if only they could find a way home...

I think I might have mentioned before that I'm a sucker for sappiness, and this show is great if you are, too, with a lot of really moving scenes throughout the show, and some cute pre-teen crushes going on in the second season.  If not, I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole if I were you.  The action's all right, but it's pretty standard anime fare; the fight sequences start with a long transformation sequence, then the good guys get kicked around a lot, and then they find their inner strength and virtue and either clobber the bad guys or remove the "evil spell" (black gear, ring, whatever) that is causing them to behave in such an antisocial manner, and "plot crap" and backstory are pretty thin in places.  In other words, only us sap addicts can sit still through more than a few episodes; the rest of you might want to skip about four out of every five.^_^
The only really disappointing thing about the show is its third season, Digimon Tamers.  I haven't seen anything quite that lame since I was forced to sit still through a little movie called
The Land of Far Away (which made me wish I was far away, if you get my drift...).  I understand that there are people out there who actually liked it, but I think they must be on crack. ^_^  It was like the writers took everything that made the first two seasons work so well and scrapped it in favor of making yet another Pokemon clone.  Ick.
