Iowa became a State in December 1846 Woodbury County gave part to Plymouth County in October 1859 ( as Plymouth & Westfield twp. ) Elkhorn Twp. gave part to Garfield Twp in 1882 First Settler is given to C. Gard who settled in the southwest corner of section 34 in 1878 which then was still Elkhorn twp. The Close Brothers purchased a large body of land, erected 36 Farm Houses and rented most of this land out. In 1879 C. Gard was followed by: S. Hammer, Heil Heald, F. Amos, Henry Cook. and then L.A. Fish. L.H. North settled in 1880. The First School was taught in 1881 in a building in section fourteen. Also in this First School house was where the preaching services ( for both township and Kingsley town ) was given by S.V. Kliner of the Methodist faith. The first birth was that of Frankie Amos The First Death was that of a child to Mr. & Mrs. J.J. Heacock |
In conclusion of Township Histories of Plymouth County, that I have made available, I must also record that on Oct. 18, 1881 Remsen Twp. gave way to Marion Twp.; On June 6, 1882 Henry Twp gave way to Union Twp.; and on April 3, 1883, the smallest twp. of the county was set off from Perry, and designated as Hancock. |
