Carrollton, Texas Long-eared Owls 1/7/01

Recently a large roost of up to 16 Long-eared Owls (Asio otus) was discovered in a live oak at 1862 Amber Lane in Carrollton, north of Dallas.  This species is quite rare in North Central Texas, so dozens of people are going to observe and photograph these birds daily.  Fox 4 featured this story on the TV news.  These photos were taken 1/7/01 by Derek Hill, when there were 12 owls in the tree.

Update:  As of February 20, 2001, all the owls have left the roost. The last remaining bird appeared sick and was taken to a local vet where it was euthanized later that night.  Hopefully the rest of the owls will come back next winter.
