Welcome to Birding Texas,
the site devoted to birding in the Great State of Texas, especially North
Central Texas
March News:
3/13/01
- Brian Gibbons and I observed the Gyrfalcon on his usual watertower
roost in Lubbock this afternoon. First at 3:45pm, and he was still there when
we left around 6:30pm. See photos here. 1/4/01
- Today Brian Gibbons and I ventured out to the western edge of North Central
Texas looking for Gyrfalcons and Snowy Owls. None of those but we had some
good raptors, probably set some NCTX record numbers. Started out in Wilbarger
Co. near Oklahoma, down through Baylor and Throckmorton Counties.
Rough-legged Hawk - 8, mostly along Hwy 222 in W. Throckmorton Co.
Ferruginous Hawk - 1 ad. dark morph
Red-tailed Hawk - plenty
Prairie Falcon - 6 (2 in Wilbarger, 4 in Throckmorton Co.)
Merlin - 1 fem. prairie type
Kestrel - plenty
Northern Harrier - at least half were ad. males, unusual
Cooper's Hawk - 1
Ducks were in good numbers on the area ponds. Best was a LONG-TAILED DUCK
on Lake Throckmorton. Had 2 large flocks (100+) of Lark Buntings in
Throckmorton Co. Also had about 1000 Sandhill Cranes in the ag fields
in Wilbarger Co. One large flock of McCown's Longspurs in Wilbarger
Co., and 6 Chestnut-collared Longspurs in Throckmorton Co. along Hwy
222. Also remarkable was the number of Loggerhead Shrikes in the area.
They were everywhere, and finally when we got to Throckmorton Co. we kept
tally and had at least 25 just in that county. Checked them all for Northerns
but no luck.
