| This year's All Star Game was one for the history books. It ended up in a 7-7 tie between the National League and American League All Stars. The game ended after 11 innings. With all 30 players on each team being used up, Joe Torre, Bob Brenly and Bud Selig decided that if the NL didn't score in the bottom of the 11th, that the game would end in a tie. This game included an awesome catch by AL center fielder Torii Hunter to rob Barry Bonds of a Home run. It also included a nice play by Jose Vidro to take a hit away from Ichiro, and a nice throw by Manny Ramirez to catch Sammy Sosa at third. The first year that the All Star MVP award had been re-named to honour the late Ted Williams, no one won the award because they didn't finish the game. The National Leage was winning 4-0 at one point, after Bonds' 2 run home run off Roy Halladay. The American league all stars scratched back to get 5 runs, and Paul Konerko's second double of the evening gave the AL a 6-5 lead. Then, the NL came back to score 2 runs off Kazuhiro Sasaki in the 7th, to take a 7-5 lead. After an Omar Vizquel triple, Robert Fick slapped a pinch hit single to tie the game at 7 a piece. Freddy Garcia came in the 10th inning and pitched 2 strong innings. He recorded the final out of the game as he struck out Benito Santiago on a masterful curve ball. He could have pitched more innings, but Joe Torre didnt' want to risk him getting hurt. But Freddy wanted to keep on going. It didn't matter though, because Bud Selig decided to be stupid and call the game! Before the game, past legends were honoured in a pre-game ceremony. Guests included Willie Mays, Dave Winfield, Paul Molitor, Hank Aaron, Robin Yount, Cal Ripken and more. |
