The wind at her back propelled her forward, making her way easier. She heard nothing. Not the traffic nor the pigeons nor the whispers of people just beginning their day. She heard nothing but the beating of her own heart and was satisfied with the sound.
She focused on her stride, the pumping of her arms and fought not to think. Some people drank, others meditated, and some ran. She ran and ran well, narrowing herself down to the steady rhythm of footsteps and the movement of air from her lungs.
She ran in place while the traffic light changed and then kept going, revelling in the feeling of weight the cold air had as it passed through her lungs.
Moving forward again she quickened her pace, and ran faster, always moving away from her apartment, not making any of the regular turns that would lead her back to it. She wanted to give Casey enough time to leave before she returned. As soon as that thought occurred to her pace slowed again and she ran under its weight. She flashed on Casey dancing alone in the club all those weeks ago and how moved she had been by it. Casey's body stretched out beneath her, moving toward orgasm, Casey waking her in the morning after all the nights they had spent together, the way she never made any demands other than her company and her body in her bed. It was addictive.
She turned a corner and kept running even with the image of Casey splayed naked on the bed waiting for her behind her eyes. It slowed her pace even more until once again she stood waiting for the light to change and this time she didn't run in place, she leaned against the light pole and caught her breath. She tried to chase the memory away with the one of Casey ending it at the restaurant, of Casey arriving at her door, but it wouldn't go. It was too powerful, to intriguing to let go of. The light changed but instead of crossing the street she turned and ran in the opposite direction.
She fought to keep a rhythm, to keep her feet in a steady staccato beat as they hit the cement but her stride was off, she knew it. Even with her eyes open she could see Casey sitting on the bed, apologizing once more and she couldn't even listen to it. She knew she wanted Casey, was excited, titillated by her, but did she want something more than what they had? Casey did and was certain about it. She ignored the traffic light and ran against the red, quickening her pace again, the wind in her face, slowing her down. The thought of Casey leaving without her saying anything kept forcing her faster.
