She needed coffee badly. She went into the kitchen and saw the coffee maker sitting on the counter and the desire deepened, seemed to grow with ever pound of her head. The obvious place for the coffee was in the cupboard above it. She opened the door and found cans: vegetables, pasta, even Spam. She shook her head at the thought of anyone eating such food and regretted it immediately as it just made the pounding worse. She opened the next cupboard and found the mugs and quickly grabbed one and found the filters sitting next to them. All she needed was the coffee and a spoon. She looked in a drawer and found a spoon but she still had no idea where Olivia kept her coffee.
Deciding she would forgo coffee she went to the fridge in search of water. There were a dozen bottles lined against the back of the fridge. She grabbed one and drained it quickly then grabbed another twisting off the cap and taking a sip. She heard the sound of the front door opening and dropped the bottle; water spilled all over the floor. She cursed quietly and went to the sink to look for a cloth. When she turned back with a sponge in hand Olivia was standing in the kitchen doorway.
Her cheeks were red from the cold and from the exercise and a light sheen of sweat covered her forehead. She leaned against the doorframe and saw the water bottle with its contents still spilling out onto the floor and Casey standing by the sink with sponge and immediately moved to grab the paper towels from their rack. She pulled a long sheaf off the roll and threw them at the water on the floor. She took the sponge from Caseys hand and said I use that for dishes not for the floor.
Sorry
Youre still here.
Yeah. I ah-
Good. Go sit. Ill make coffee.
Casey took a place at the two-seater kitchen table and watched as Olivia moved easily around the kitchen, grabbing the coffee beans from the fridge and the grinder from the cupboard. Casey winced at the noise as she ground the beans but said nothing. Soon there was the sound of water dripping into the pot and the smell of freshly brewing coffee. Olivia continued to dance through the movements of coffee making, grabbing sugar and milk and laying it all on the table before Casey as she sat silent waiting for Olivia to speak. She felt certain another apology would be pointless so instead chose silence.
When the coffee was done Olivia filled two mugs and brought them to the table. She sat on in front of Casey and sat the other in front of the empty chair and finally sat down herself. They both added milk and sugar and took the first sip without saying anything. Casey luxuriated in the slight bitterness that seemed to calm the throbbing in her head. Finally Olivia spoke.
Did you mean what you said last night?
What exactly did I say?
Olivia couldnt help but smile. She took a sip of her coffee. You said you only called it off because I didnt let you in.
Casey said nothing, simply nodded. It was true. She didnt need to say it again. She took a long drink from her coffee and waited for Olivia to continue.
I didnt realise you wanted more. Maybe I should have.
There was a pause before Casey spoke. And maybe I should have tried talking to you rather than just ending it.
So try now. Talk.
