Jerry started his basketball career playing for East Bank High School. He led his team to a state championship when he was a senior. He became the first high school basketball player in West Virginia to score more than 900 points in one season. West left high school with offers from more than 60 colleges. However, he decided to stay at home and go to West Virginia University. West went 17-0 with his team during his freshman year. He averaged 17.8, 26.6, and 29.3 ppg. When West was a junior, he led his team to the NCAA finals and received the tournament's Most Outstanding Player Award. During his seniour year of playing basketball for West Virginia University, he led his team to a third consecutive conference championship. He played for the US Olypmic Gold Medal team in Rome, Italy in 1960. West is in fourth place on the career scoring average list, which is 27, behind Michael Jordan, Wilt Chamberlain, and Elgin Baylor. He is in third place on the free throws made list, which is 7,160, behind Moses Malone and Oscar Roberstson. He was named NBA All-Defensive First Team four times. West was selected 14 times to be on the All-Star teams. He averaged 29.1 ppg in 153 playoff games and 40.6 ppg in 11 playoff games in 1965. West won his only NBA championship in 1972, playing with the greatest team EVER. He retired in 1974 because of his injuries. He coached the Lakers from 1976 until 1979. He was the Lakers' general manager from 1982 until 1994. He was the executive vice president since 1995, when he was named NBA Executive of the Year. Jerry West is still used as the model for the NBA logo.
