MESS WITH SHAQ MONTH
Updated 12/01/01 by Guest Writer - Joseph Chang
In the so-called "Mess with Shaq Month", Shaq's game seemed to be greatly affected, not only his free throws, but also his mentality. But, tonight, against seriously overmatched starting center for the T-Wolves, Rasho Nesterovic just watched as Shaq dominated the lane for 23 pts and 9 rbds in 32 minutes. Even the league's team with the second best record, couldn't help, but concede to the Lakers. The game was kept competitive in the first half, with the help of Wally Szczerbiak, but the floodgates were opened in the third quarter as Hunter led the Lakers in an impressive third quarter run. The win was their 38th in 40 games, including last year. Notes.... -The Lakers' superstars, Shaq and Kobe, combined only for only 59 minutes, but thankfully, their game was not cut short this time by ejections. -Shaq's FT% improves as he went 5-7 tonight. "Are these better, Stern?" Shaquille O'neal asked, after managing to fit a pair of the Utah Guard John Stockton's shorts. Shaq was fined earlier that month for wearing his shorts too baggy. Among others fined were Kobe Bryant and Eric Piatowski.
LAKERS & CLIPPERS - THE SEMI-SEMI-RIVALRY CONTINUES
Updated 11/20/01 by Guest Writer - Joseph Chang
The Lakers, amid turmoil with MVP center Shaquille O'neal and zen master Phil Jackson, faced their er... semi-semi-rivals the Clippers. The Lakers seemed dominant, even a little too dominant as Shaq was slapped with a T for 'taunting' Michael Olowakandi. But, facing a 13 point deficit, the Clipps rallied for a 23-10 run in the 4th and at one point had the lead. However, the Lakers recovered just in time, and got the 5 point victory, thanks to Brian Shaw's four free throws in the final minute.
Notes...
-Kobe led the Lakers with 25 pts and a career high 12 assists; Elton Brand led the Clips with 33 pts and season high 19 rebounds.
-Previous to the game, a number of players were fined. Among them were Shaq, Piatowski, and McInnis. " Would all the kids then wear John Stockton shorts? No, they wouldn't. They would laugh at me, and I wouldn't be their favorite player any more. I'd be the laughingstock of big men."-Shaq O'neal
LAKERS & JAZZ IN A BAKERY
Updated 11/4/01 by Guest Writer - Joseph Chang
The aged dynamic, if not ancient, duo of stockton and malone may not have the same youthful energy they did five years ago, or the effectiveness of the pick and roll, as new defensive rules allow them to be double-teamed at all times. But, the two combined for a total of 64 minutes, 26 points, and 7 assists, in an effort to overcome the defending champs. The Jazz led for three quarters, but fell short, thanks to late-game heroics by Kobe among others, as the Lakers pulled off another victory. Game Notes: Usual benchwarmer Devean George played in 24 minutes tonight, but only scored 3 points and grabbed 1 rebound. The Lakers were down by 19 at one point, but finished strong to beat the Jazz 100-96. The title is LAKERS & JAZZ IN A BAKERY because of the turnovers.
