Personal Statement I was born in Somalia on January 1, 1987. In 1990, at the age of four, a civil war broke in Somalia that lead my family and I to escape to Kenya. I don’t remember much about the experience, but my parents told me the danger and lack of safety they faced trying to live their homeland-Somalia, to their new home-Kenya. After five years of harmony in Kenya, we had to move to Ethiopia to visit out relatives; at that time my aunt who lived there sponsored us to move to the United States. I was excited to move to America, because of the many good things I heard about it. I started school here in the third grade. I had being living in San Diego since 1995, which is the most of my life. I am really grateful to get the opportunity to further my education, something my parents never got the opportunity to do. I have many goals I want to accomplish. My primary goal right now is to graduate from High School, in order to set an example for my younger siblings and to better my family’s life. My second goal is to go to college and graduate with a master’s degree as a counselor. My career goal is to become a counselor. I want to work with high school students, because I like helping this particular group, since they face many issues. Most importantly, my counselor had a major impact in my decision to become a counselor, after seeing how much she helps and cares for students who want to go to college, I decided that I want to do the same. While I am in college I would also like to help my community in any way I can. I also want to empower Somali students to go to college and also tell them that they can make their dreams come true. I also want to go to my country one day and try to make a positive change there. I hope to obtain a college degree and have the opportunity to live my dreams by pursuing a career I want.
