| "Namaskar or Namaste is the most popular form of greeting in India. It is a general salutation that is used to greet or welcome someone and also for bidding farewell. While doing Namaskar, both the palms are placed together and raised below the face to greet a person. It is believed that both the hands symbolise one mind, or the self meeting the self. While the right hand represents higher nature, the left hand denotes worldly or lower nature." -Escape To India Namasthe The whole act communicates, "You and I are essentially One, I prostate myself before you, who is a mirror image of myself." "I bow to the God within you" -Ed Viswanathan, Author Am I Hindu Namaste, pronounced nah-mah-STAY is Sanskrit in origin, the root being, "Nam," bowing or silently submitting). "Namas" a reverent greeting or salutation. "Te" means "to you." "You" being the divinity, the universe, the life force of all that is. In the west, reiki and yoga practitioners and people that have traveled to India or Nepal know what Namaste means. In yoga, it is used to open and end a session, also as part of the Sun (Surya) asana. Many reiki and yoga practitioners use Namaste to greet each other. Many of us use the phrase and gesture, dont know what it means yet know it's an act of reverence. Dont you feel enveloped in the oneness of all when you use it? Of course you do! Without anyone telling you the meaning, instinctively you know you are performing a sacred act. You feel humble. Ego is put aside, your mind and body relax. You connect with your heart center, and in doing so make that same connection to the person you are greeting. The three motions, putting the hands together at the heart center, bowing the head slightly, and saying Namaste is called the Anjali mudra.
