~The Divine Lotus ~ The Lotus flower grows in many colors in every continent of the world. It is revered as a symbol of striving thru difficulty, reaching for the light or higher self, death and re-birth. As in many cultures, it is held sacred in India, and is its national flower. In Hinduism the chakras are often pictured as lotuses. Religious History: The Lotus bloom disappearing in the water at night and rising with the sun, became a symbol for Horus, the ancient Egyptian Sun God. In Buddhism the Lotus is a symbol of purity and divine birth, that is why Buddha is depicted seated on a lotus in full bloom. Hindu scriptures teach that the Self God dwells in the lotus within the heart. Nearly every God & Goddess depicted in Hinduism is shown seated on, and or holding a Lotus flower. As Metaphor: The human spirit has been described as an unopened lotus. Just as the lotus seed struggles to grow from the bottom of a dark, muddy pond. We humans struggle thru the dark nights of our soul towards enlightenment. As the lotus grows towards the light, it filters impurities from the water around it until it is clear. The human spirit as it grows, filters out impurities, searching, seeking, speaking our truths, opening to our higher selves. Finally, the lotus emerges into the light as a beautiful, fragrant bloom. The human spirit too, after many struggles, emerges into the light, opening to a beautiful bloom. Significance of colors (Buddhism) White: Perfection, the state of total mental purity and spiritual perfection, and the pacification of our nature. It generally has eight petals corresponding to the Noble Eightfold Path of the Good Law. Pink: This is the supreme lotus, generally reserved for the highest deity, the lotus of the historical Buddha. Red lotus: Symbolizes the original nature of the heart. It is the lotus of love, compassion, passion, activity and all the qualities of the heart. Blue lotus: Symbol of the victory of the spirit over the senses, of intelligence and wisdom, of knowledge. Purple lotus: The mystic lotus, power or yogic accomplishment. -Khallimaya , 2004 Free Lotus flower screensaver |
