Boyz,
As I read KW's missives and the others, I feel the excitement building and the fact that I won't be with you hits home. It sounds like it will be a terrific trip that could only be matched by a
Club Med trip to Haiti. I wish you all a bon voyage.
Anyway, as a few of you may know I've left the employ of GE and am now working for Honeywell (formerly Allied Signal/Chemical). This new job has given
me the opportunity to run, at least once a week, through our Alma Mater. My runs down Madison Ave and through the campus have conjured up 30 year old memories both pleasant and painful. As I run past
Mary Hemmer's old street I think I remember Halloween parties.
Upon entering the grounds via the west gate I'm reminded of September 1, 1969, triple sessions and running around the campus with the football team as Flanagan flatulated. That's what I remember.
As I pass the front lawn I can remember being in the back of Dyer's '62 Biscayne (which was big enough for two to lay down in the back seat) doing 360's on the grass after Saturday night football meetings.
Always praying we were not going to broadside a tree or Martini's lime green W. Dream. Next is a boarded up conservatory and filled in pool.
When I pass the mansion I remember being a scared freshman always afraid I might be flushed by the Moore twins (if you watched the Jets vs. Tampa Sunday their nephew Dave scored a TD). I can still see us standing on the hill, varsity jackets worn proudly, posing for the yearbook. You should see the football field. It's like they don't even practice on it. No worn out middle, no dirt patches. Besides the uprights they have soccer goals at either end. Running past Mt. St. Barnicle I got shivers thinking about the windsprints, up and down. I always thought I might trip and be trampled by "Tank" Natale or Gary Muth. Next I can hear echoes of Yellow Submarine, led by Mullen.
Their practice area (where we used to do exercises) is covered with football equipment.
I can only remember a rusty old seven man sled and Jimmy Dangler holding a tackling dummy. As I leave campus through the Father Meekim gate I soon pass the "dust bowl" while running down Danforth Ave. It is covered with a thick, plush grass. Who in their right mind would let young men do windsprints in that environment? If I develop lung disease I'll know why.
For those of you who didn't play football I apologize for my rambling. To the rest of you, remember the Vally game.
Well that's all for now. Have a great weekend. What are we doing next year?
Mike
