Our History
In early October 1983, several Occupational Development Centers serving Western Indiana came together as one to become Western Indiana Private Industry Council. The new employment and training entitiy would now service Vigo, Vermillion, Clay, Parke and Putnam counties. It would operate under the newly implemented Job Training Partnership Act. In the 1990's, the name would be changed to Western Indiana Employment and Training Services, Inc. and would eventually operate under the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) in partnership with the Western Indiana Workforce Investment Board (WIWIB). |

In its 20 years of existence, WIETS has been able to help many thousands of persons get the training they need to gain substantial employment. Training has come in many forms including job readiness, short term and longer term training. Much of the longer term training has led to a needed degree.
The objective is always to get the participant into viable work. This has also been accomplished through direct job placement, as well as on the job training contracts.
WIETS not only has worked with unemployed and underemployed, but with dislocated workers as well. Major outplacement projects have taken place with J.I.Case, Alcan Aluminum, Chesty Foods, Pillsbury Corporation, Amax and Peabody Coal, Donnelley Corporation, International Paper, Hulman Company and Pitman Moore.
WIETS has also worked with disadvantaged youth. We have had large, successful summer youth programs for many years, working with as many as 450 youth from the five county area. In addition, we provide some year-round internship programs.
Our mission and history have also included IMPACT programs and Welfare-to-Work intitiatives. Within WIETS' past twenty years, we have proudly assisted hundreds of local citizens secure training and employment such as: computer programmers, registered and licensed practical nurses, office managers, factory foremen and auto mechanics - just to name a few! |
