This website is my attempt to document the engine conversion into my 1986 corolla twincam 16.  The old 16 valve engine had 230 000 k's on it and although it still ran fine, it blew heaps of smoke when you started it on cold mornings.  Once it was at normal temperature it didn't blow any smoke  After speaking to a few people it seemed that it was probably the valve stem seals that needed replacing.  So my dad and I replaced them but it didn't make the slightest bit of difference.  We decided it must have a crack somewhere or a blown head gasket.  Since I had some money saved up and it only had to last 5 more weeks till school finished I decided to keep driving as it was and hope it didn't get any worse and then put a new motor in when i finish school.
I didn't want to put a stock motor back in because for the same price i could get a much faster japanese one.  So I rang around to see how much for a GZE halfcut and i found a AFM one for $1850.  I drove to sydney to have a look at it but it must have sitting at a dock in japan for ages because it was really rusty and had birdnest in the airbox! They started it up and it sounded ok until i gave it a rev, it was so rusted that the throttle stuck open.  The noise was unbelievable as it went straight to its rev limiter somewhere around 8000rpm.  Anyway i didn't buy it because it was too rusty and who knows what damage i did when it revved so fast when it was stone cold.  Having a look around the wrecker i found the 20v halfcut.  There was no rust at all and only
50 000k's on the speedo.  They started it and it sounded pretty good and after a short time haggling i bought it for $2350.  The 20v doesn't quite have the performance of the GZE but it's still pretty quick and is awesome on fuel
