| Getting the electrics working was a big job. It would be impossible without wiring diagrams. It's best to get the loom working while there is no engine in the car, it's much easier when you've got room to work. It was a daunting job at first as nothing matched up. After a few hours i had made some progress, even if it was only getting the headlights to work. A lot of the wire colours matched up which made somethings easier. The hole in the firewall that the loom passes through is in a different location on the halfcut, so the computer can't be mounted in the stock location unless you lengthen all the wires. Instead, I used double sided tape and mounted the computer behind the glovebox. I didn't actually plug the computer in till very last, just in case something shorted and wrecked the computer. It would be near impossible to get a standard replacement computer, the only option would be an aftermarket computer ($1500+). It took several hours after we first turned the key before it finally burst into life. First there was no fuel, the injectors need constant 12V to work, as the computer just puts them to earth to turn them on. Then we found there was no spark. Both the igniter and coil need constant 12V to work, the old loom had the injectors, igniter and coil power from the same wire, the new loom has a seperate wire for each. Once i hooked all this up it finally started, which was a big relief. I had problems with the alternator which wasn't charging. In a moment of stupidity i had managed to hook up it's power supply to the oil pressure switch! no wonder it wasn't working. One thing that caught me out was the battery connections. These engines have something like 11.5:1 compression, mine has 210psi at each cylinder which is fairly massive. The starter motor has to work very hard to start this engine and if there is a dodgy connection or the battery is even slightly flat it won't even turn over. |

| Here's a link to a site which has a service manual for the blacktop engine, it has some useful electrics info, ecu pinouts etc. | ||||||
