Distance Learning - taking courses without being physically at a school; today largely conducted through the Internet.   

Charter Schools
- private schools that are funded by the government but are managed by a team hired by the parents instead of the local school board. 

Home-schooling - Learning at one's own home from the parents without attending school. 

- maintain value system
- flexible schedule

Corporatization
- schools get money in return for product/service advertisements. 

+ve: solves funding problems
-ve: conflict of interest may arise when students have varying opinions about a certain product/service

9.1 Why Join a Group

(I) Types of Groups
dyad
- a two-member social group
Primary group - members have close, intimate relationships with one another
Secondary group - members have less personal relationships with one another

(II) Explanations

Sociological: People need to join various groups (both 1 and 2) to enjoy/accept norms

Psychological: Personality determines the reason for committing to a group

Anthropological:  Provides subscription to a culture and its elements
