8.1 Issues in Education

(I) School Discipline
Code of Conduct � a set of guidelines and policies intended to improve the school environment by increasing discipline.

(II) Issues
Dress code, suspension, expulsion, dropping out, violence, bullying. 

(III) Accounts for Violence
Anthropology: widespread imagery that excuses violence in our culture
Psychology: alienation and bullying individuals

8.2 The Purpose/Expansion of Education

Functionalism � analyzes how the parts of society should work to achieve well-being and stability for everyone.

- skills, knowledge and value transmission
- supporting individualism, competition and nationalism (latent functions)
- socializing students into mainstream
- replacing the family

Conflict Theorist � Marxism; education is a tool for the dominant to control others

However, in Japan, Prussia, Denmark, etc. schools have been established before the Industrial Revolution.
