NEWS - Kenny Chesney Hopes
To Bring CMAs Home (9/16/99, 1 p.m. PDT) - The Country Music Assn. Awards are fast approaching, with less than a week left until the big night on Sept. 22. Kenny Chesney, one of the lucky artists up for multiple awards, says he says he is extremely honored by the nominations. "To have a CMA nomination--it's really a big thrill," he tells LAUNCH. "It really is, because we've been in this business a while, and the fact that they're recognizing now what I'm doing out there on the road and on the sales charts, and how my career has grown in the past two or three years has really been great. The fact that we've been recognized for it has been great." Chesney's "How Forever Feels" vies for the music video of the year award against "Don't Laugh At Me" by Mark Wills, "I'll Go On Loving You" by Alan Jackson, "Just To Hear You Say That You Love Me" by Faith Hill with Tim McGraw, and "Wide Open Spaces" by the Dixie Chicks. However, Chesney says that he is perhaps most proud of his nod for the 1999 Horizon Award--he's been nominated along with Sara Evans, Jo Dee Messina, the Wilkinsons, and Chely Wright. "To be nominated and to be recognized is great, but to win is icing on the cake," Chesney says. "It's ,'OK You belong. We really think you belong in this business, that's why we voted for you.' The fact that the CMA has nominated me [is] great, but I'm not going to sit here and say I wouldn't love to win, because I would. The people who have won that in the past have gone on to great things in this business, and I would love to be able to do that." The 1999 Country Music Assn. Awards will be broadcast live from the Grand Ole Opry on Sept. 22 on CBS. Features on Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, the Dixie Chicks, Jo Dee Messina, and Chely Wright are available on LAUNCH.com. -- Jen Gerlock

Postpones Engagement (12/13/99, 12 p.m. ET) - Kenny Chesney's best friend, Tracy Lawrence, commented to reporters earlier that Chesney's engagement to former fiancée Mandy Weals had been postponed, but LAUNCH went straight to the horse's mouth for confirmation of the fact. "We are not getting married right now, and we are no longer engaged," Chesney said. "But we still love each other. I mean, it's hard…it's hard…it's so hard. I love her as much as you could love anybody, and I think she loves me, too. [But] there's a lot of issues that I will not discuss. Right now, we are not getting married, but I hope to marry her one day," he concluded. Chesney and Weals had previously made plans for a November 1999 wedding, but those plans were postponed as well. Currently, Chesney plans to focus heavily on his career as a recording artist and performer. His latest single, "She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy," is at No. 17 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart. His album, Everywhere We Go, remains in the top 10 on the Billboard country albums chart. -- Tracy Lawson, Nashville
NEWS - Kenny Chesney Hasn't Stocked His Tomato Soup For Y2K 12/31/1999 (12/31/99, 12 p.m. ET) - While much of the population is concerned about the aftereffects of Y2K, Kenny Chesney has no worries, and no plans. He expects that he will be spending the holiday watching the ball drop from his grandmother's living room, as he tells LAUNCH. "No. I mean, I'm not one of these guys that have stocked tomato soup and you know, and water and pulled $5,000 out of the bank. I'm not one of these guys that have done that…Everybody's so worried about it. I'm not worried about it. I'm not gonna go out. I'm probably gonna go sit with my grandmother and my mother up in East Tennessee. I'm just gonna watch Dick Clark on TV." In fact, Chesney thinks he may even sleep through the clock ticking past midnight on New Year's Eve. He may decide to support the University of Tennessee Volunteers by attending the Fiesta Bowl. "I totally hope I'm awake when the whole millennium thing comes along, but I'm 'bout 80% sure that I won't be. So I don't know. If I go to the Tennessee game in Tempe - to the Tennessee/Nebraska game, to the Fiesta Bowl - I will be out there. And if I go, I will probably go out before New Year's Eve." Chesney does know, with a limited amount of certainty that he will not be performing while the world rings in the New Year. "We've had a lot of offers to go out and play on the road, but I just didn't wanna do it. I'm gone 10 months out of the year on a tour bus, and I just didn't wanna go play on New Year's Eve. It would take a tremendous amount of money to make me go play on New Year's Eve." -- Tracy Lawson
