What is a Severe Thunderstorm?

Severe thunderstorms are classed as one of natures most destructive and dangerous natural hazard. They can strike at just about anywhere in Australia and the full force of the storm can cause massive chaos and destruction.

A severe thunderstorm is a strong storm which involves the features of an ordinary thunderstorm (rain, hail along with lightning and/or thunder), in addition to producing:

  • Hail with diameter of >2 cm


  • Strong Wind Gusts of >90km/h


  • Flash flooding


  • Tornadoes

Or any combinations of the above features.
